Job Purpose

We are seeking one to one support for our autistic daughter to enable her to access the community and expand her life experiences. She is unable to do this independently and requires a personal assistant to support her. It is important for the PA to motivate her whilst being encouraging, adaptable and supportive. It is important the PA be attuned to our daughter’s significant difficulties and plan accordingly.

Main duties:

We are seeking a PA for our adult daughter. She has high functioning autism, ADHD and extremely elevated social and generalised anxiety. She has a good sense of humour and it is important that her PA also has a sense of fun.

We are looking someone who is kind, caring, trustworthy and reliable, who has the patience to help our daughter overcome her many anxieties. Someone who will encourage and help her develop confidence, nurture her self belief, raise her self esteem and support the development of personal growth by expanding her interests and experiences.

Our daughter struggles to organise herself, plan and time keep. She finds it difficult to stay focused and is easily distracted. She is an extremely anxious person and needs someone to help her connect with the outside world otherwise she would become extremely isolated and never leave the family home. Another aspect of this role is to support our daughter with social tasks and social interactions. This role will focus primarily on social exposure out in the community and the encouragement of some independence away from the home.

She becomes very stuck in routines and behaviours; it is vitally important that her PA encourages her to engage in new experiences. This could involve supported volunteering or the exploration of new hobbies. This would require significant patience on the support worker’s part, as it would be necessary to overcome our daughter’s anxieties first, followed with a gentle introduction. This might take the form of visiting a venue several times first. Followed by observing others undertaking the activity several times before encouraging our daughter to try these potential new hobbies or experiences out for herself.

Other than reminding and prompting our daughter to eat and drink at appropriate times and ensuring her safety and wellbeing at all times, this role does not require any personal care. There are no behavioural concerns.

Personal Specification

• Must have a good sense of humour
• Be patient and supportive
• Previous experience or good understanding of Autism, ADHD and Anxiety
• Be friendly and outgoing
• Be honest, reliable and trustworthy
• Have a positive can do attitude
• Nurturing and encouraging

Special Conditions

Due to the nature of this job and our rural location a full driving licence with business insurance is a prerequisite to this position. Previous experience working with individuals with autism, ADHD and anxiety would be desirable but not essential to this role. However it is important that you have good knowledge and understanding of these conditions and the impact on daily life these conditions have on someone like our daughter.

More important is finding the right fit personality wise for our daughter and someone with a positive can do attitude.
