• Provide high quality OT service to parents and babies during the perinatal period.
• Responsible for the delivery a range of evidence based interventions which promote recovery, social inclusion and normalisation for service users.

• Develop and deliver a specialist occupational therapy group program to mothers and babies during the perinatal period
• Critically evaluate effectiveness of therapy interventions, in collaboration with service users, carers and other professionals.
• Provide specialist clinical advice and contribute to clinical information on service users’ progress by attending MDT meetings and liaison meetings.
• Work in partnership with a range of other services to provide support and treatment to service users to facilitate the safe management of both mother and babies needs.
• Work within the safeguarding adults and children frameworks across the Trust.
• Take responsibility for an evidence-based clinical audit.

Probationary Period

This post will be subject to a probationary period. Internal applicants are exempt from the probationary period (unless you are an internal applicant currently part way through a probationary period or currently a bank member of staff).

Starting with NELFT

NELFT place a great deal of importance on new starters being properly welcomed and inducted into the Trust. All new starters will join the Trust on the first Monday of each month and will undertake a comprehensive induction of up to two weeks which will include mandatory training, systems training and the allocation of equipment. As part of the process new starters will have the opportunity to also meet the executive team, senior managers and attend a number of drop in sessions focussing in engagement, health and wellbeing and key processes. The induction will be held at our head office in Rainham, Essex.

High Cost Area Supplement - Outer London

This post also attracts payment for High Cost Area Supplement of 15% of the basic salary (with a minimum of £4,313 to a maximum of £5,436 p.a. pro rata for part time).

High Cost Area Supplement - Fringe

This post also attracts payment for High Cost Area Supplement of 5% of the basic salary (with a minimum of £1,192 to a maximum of £2,011 p.a. pro rata for part time).

Key Responsibilities:

Clinical Skills


• Be professionally and legally accountable for all aspects of own work.
• Manage, plan and implement comprehensive specialist occupational therapy (OT) assessments of service users offering a range of interventions, including diverse or complex presentations/multi pathologies.
• Use advanced clinical reasoning skills and manual assessment techniques to provide an accurate diagnosis of their condition.
• Provide interventions in settings which best reflects service and service user needs.
• Devise effective and outcome based care plans, which are developed in conjunction with the service user and others.
• Provide the treatment programme, or where appropriate, direct the intervention as necessary to other members of the team.
• Use advanced clinical skills and knowledge in assessment to identify contradictions.
• Apply clinical knowledge and skills to carry out one to one and group interventions which are underpinned by relevant theoretical and evidence based approaches.
• Develop and deliver group programmes.
• Initiate referrals to other professionals in agreement with the service user.
• Organise home, access visits and equipment as necessary.
• Advise and promote the empowerment and education of service users, and others in relation to their holistic health and self-management skills through spontaneous and planned advice, teaching and instruction.
• Exercise professional judgement in complex and difficult cases and crucially appraise interventions techniques.
• Gain informed consent and have the ability to work within a legal framework with service users who lack the capacity to achieve valid consent.
• Responsible for the provision of a regular system of monitoring service users, whose treatment has been delegated by other team members.
• To work in line with appropriate strategies, NHS Improvement Plan, NSF for People with Long Term Conditions and appropriate NICE guidance.





Leadership


• Lead by example and display a leadership style that empowers others through encouragement, development and innovative problem solving.
• Work as an autonomous practitioner, managing and prioritising own caseload according to local guidelines and identified need.
• Work in a variety of settings, exercising a high level of judgement, discretion and decision making in clinical care.
• Responsible for the clinical supervision and co-ordination of junior staff, students and assistants on a daily basis.
• Evaluate the performance of staff in order to ensure high clinical standards.
• Lead on designated projects, as delegated by Operational Lead to ensure effective communication and standardisation of practice.
• Promote collaborative practice across organisations, teams and localities – preventing duplication and promoting seamless care in the best interests of service users.
• Network with other multi-disciplinary, statutory, private and voluntary organisations, users, carers and assisting in managing the interfaces between them.
• Responsible for effective management of resources and equipment.
• Deputise for the Band 7 Occupational Therapist as required.





Administration


• To be computer literate and encourage implementation of the Trust’s IM&T Strategy.
• To ensure accurate recording of actions, and updating patient’s records, maintaining confidentiality at all times.
• Responsible for maintaining accurate and comprehensive patient records, in line with professional standards of practice and within the parameters lead down in Trust Record Keeping policies and Information Sharing Protocols.
• Keep a record of equipment issued and returned, as required by the various suppliers and departmental procedures.
• Participate in general clerical duties, administrative tasks and organisation of the service as required.
• Responsible for own time management and monitoring of others through supervision.





Communication


• Use a range of verbal and non-verbal communication tools to communicate effectively with service users and carers, especially where there maybe barriers to understanding.
• Anticipate and manage barriers resistance to change, liaising and seeking appropriate support as required.
• Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing, ensuring all service user and carer information is confidentiality maintained and recorded in accordance with Trust policy and COT guidelines.
• Work collaboratively with children’s services teams. Ensuring robust communication and liaison where relevant information relating to a child or young person (0-19) is obtained during the course of their work.





Training


• Responsible for teaching and supervising students in therapeutic skills and knowledge with support from more senior staff in line with NELFT policy.
• Act as a Practice Educator for OT students on Professional Practice Placements.
• Provide professional development to OT’s/other disciplines by giving advice on clinical matters, participating in in-service training programme and promoting the role of the OT.
• Engage in activities related to clinical effectiveness via audit, research and evidence based practice.
• Maintain own competency to practice through CPD activities in accordance with Trust, HPCP and professional body requirements.
• Actively participate in own clinical supervision, annual performance review and personal development planning. Compile own portfolio.
• Ensure own practice and that of staff under supervision meet the required HCPC Code of Professional Conduct.
• Keep up-to-date with current knowledge and advances in Occupational Therapy practice.
