This is a full-time, fixed term post (12 months) focused specifically on developing oral health improvement interventions for people with experience of drugs. The post is attached to a Scottish Government Funded Project and is led jointly with Public Health Scotland. An appropriate Honorary Contract with Public Health Scotland will be sought to support joint working. You will be expected to form part of the leadership for the project, taking on significant responsibility for planning and delivery of the project within defined timelines. Expected output from the project will include oral health improvement resources focused on people with experience of drugs, that can be utilised in Scotland's communities and in a range of sectors. The project forms the basis for developing a complex intervention and will utilize MRC Complex Intervention methodology. Development of a monitoring and evaluation framework to measure impact of the outputs from the project is an essential component of this post. This project presents an excellent opportunity to be involved in research that is embedded in service delivery leading to direct impact on public health practice.

You will have the opportunity to be involved in seeking external grant funding to support the next stage of this work (namely the refinement stage of complex intervention development). The project will provide the opportunity to undertake excellent research, produce high quality publications and/or other equivalent research outputs and demonstrate research impact. The post holder will be key to supporting the School's strategy for knowledge exchange and strengthening links with communities and the health & social care sector.

Your priorities will include:

  • Development of an evidence based oral health improvement intervention for people with experience of drugs that will be delivered in health and social care settings, using a participatory approach.
  • Work closely with senior colleagues in the School and with project partner Public Health Scotland to plan, design, and develop the intervention.
  • Recruit people with lived experience to inform the design process and lead Patient and Public Involvement activity.
  • Plan and execute data collection to support the project using qualitative methods and facilitation of workshops.
  • Embed research activities in the development process with a focus on producing high quality research outputs (Research Excellence Framework grading of internationally excellent or world leading) and disseminating work in appropriate forums including conferences, knowledge exchange events, and community events.

Who we're looking for:

  • A BA, BSc, BDS or relevant equivalent qualification.
  • A PhD qualification or equivalent substantial postgraduate/professional experience
  • Evidence of deep knowledge of health services research and service development.
  • Evidence of success in developing proposals for research projects with clear aims and objectives.
  • Evidence of engaging in knowledge exchange and research impact.
  • Evidence of sustained interdisciplinary collaborations.
