Overview

We are offering a 4 year apprenticeship which includes practical training and educational support for mechanical/electrical (multi-skilled) maintenance engineering. The successful applicants will help us to look after state of the art fish feed production machinery and associated support equipment in a modern and dynamic engineering environment. The site is a large industrial fish feed factory based on the Isle of Skye and is part of the world's leading seafood company.

What will I learn?

Your training will be delivered in partnership with UHI Inverness, who will provide the academic learning associated with your Modern Apprenticeship. This learning will be delivered alongside a wide range of practical training so that you understand how theory meets practice in engineering. Your practical training will cover a broad range of mechanical and electrical engineering skills, including:

  • How to work safely, including how to conduct engineering tasks safely in a factory environment.
  • How to maintain mechanical and electrical systems, including robotics and process controls.
  • How to carry out planned preventative maintenance, condition based monitoring and fault diagnosis.
  • How to use a computer based maintenance management system.
  • How to obtain and account for engineering spare parts and materials.

You will also learn how to administer your needs as an engineer, including:

  • How to conduct engineering work safely and within the law.
  • How to use information to help you in engineering.
  • How to be effective and efficient as an engineer.
  • How to hand over engineering work to and receive work from your colleagues.

What are the hours?

40 hours per week.

07:00 – 15:30 Monday to Friday (includes daily 30 minutes unpaid break).

31 days annual leave inclusive of all public holidays. In year 1 no holidays to be taken during term time.

During year 1 you will be released to attend UHI Inverness for approx. 33 weeks and accommodation provided by UHI if required.

What will I be paid?

£20,000 per annum.

What qualifications will I achieve?

SVQ2 Performing Engineering Operations.

National Certificate in Electrical Engineering.

Work Placed Diploma in Engineering.

What skills and qualifications do I need?

The main attributes that you will need to complete your Modern Apprenticeship are the ability to listen and learn, ambition and determination. However, to apply you'll need:

  • If you went to school in Scotland, you will need three Scottish National 5 level qualifications these qualifications should include Mathematics, and Science based subject e.g. Physics, Chemistry.
  • If you went to school in England, you will need a grade 9-5 (grade A* - C) GCSE in Mathematics and at least two other grade 9-4 / grade (A*- C) GCSE qualifications (IGCSE qualifications are accepted).
  • If you do not have the academic qualifications above, we will consider applicants who hold a current National Certificate in an engineering based subject.
