We are seeking an inspiring and dynamic Pharmacy Technician to join our senior pharmacy team at Chesterfield Royal Hospital. This leadership role is crucial in ensuring that core pharmacy services run safely and efficiently within the organisation. You will work closely with the divisional and pharmacy management teams to ensure operational aspects of medication supply, through our 2 dispensaries, stores, and ward distribution services. You will lead on efficiency and drive cost improvement opportunities though procurement and oversight of the high-cost drugs agenda.
The operational needs of the department are challenging and diverse and there is plenty of scope for ongoing development and innovation.
The posts have arisen from phase 2 of a senior restructure and now is the ideal and exciting time to join the team as we move into the future. This post would suit an experienced Pharmacy Technician with high standards who will strive improve quality of care we provide to our patients.
You will lead a large team of Pharmacy Technicians and Assistants, working closely with the Principal and Senior technicians in each area. You will also link closely with other areas of the team who provide core aspects of our service delivery. You will ensure operationally the service meets changing needs of the organisation and is able to react to unforeseen pressures. You will help develop and maintain business continuity plans and take a lead on emergency preparedness, resilience, and be responsible for EPRR planning for pharmacy.
You will support and develop relationships with external partners ensuring appropriate service level agreements and performance management arrangements are in place.
You will have a key role in ensuring the department meets regulatory compliance in the areas you manage, and medication safety is prioritised. You will coordinate pharmacy clinical trial activity.

• Statutory Management• Ensure that pharmacy staff working within the managed sections comply with all statutory requirements relating to pharmacy services and to Trust employment.
• Supports the Chief Pharmacist to ensure registrable pharmacy activities comply with the GPhC standards for a registered pharmacy.
• Ensure that the Pharmacy Stores and Distribution Team led by the Principal Technician meet the requirements of Good Distribution Practice and wholesale dealing, supports the Responsible Person RP so that the Trust can maintain its MHRA wholesale dealers licensed status.
• Strategic Management• Contribute to the development, review and delivery of the Pharmacy Strategy, annual objectives and key regional & national projects.
• Co-ordinate the transformation and service development plans for the relevant sections of the Pharmacy department to continually improve effectiveness and affordability.
• Deputise for the Chief Pharmacist when appropriate.
• Interpret broad clinical/professional policies and NHS guidance to ensure that pharmacy and organisational strategic plans are appropriately updated.
• Provide professional pharmaceutical and management leadership to direct reports and their wider teams.
• Take overarching responsibility for developing, implementing and monitoring pharmacy policy, practice and standards in relation to specific areas of the pharmacy service including Procurement, Distribution, Dispensing Services and High Cost Drugs
• Responsible for monitoring departmental SLA and Key Performance Indicators for out sourced dispensing services and medicines supply
• To ensure that projects, changes and developments are planned and managed to ensure that success can be adequately measured.
• Develop and contribute to Divisional & Trust wide strategy.
• Service Delivery and Operational Management• Responsible for operational delivery of the Pharmacy service in relation to specific areas of the pharmacy service including Procurement, Distribution, Dispensing Services and High-Cost Drugs.
• Work with other Business Unit and Divisional managers to deliver the service required by the Trust.
• Supports effective stock management throughout all sections to reduce wastage and improve efficient use of resources.
• Ensure the Pharmacy department objectives are achieved through use of appropriate staffing structures, delegation and internal reporting and accounting.
• Ensure that all relevant health and safety legislation, training and equipment are deployed to protect staff and customers.
• Lead the Business Continuity planning and response to emergencies including major incident preparation and business continuity issues.
• Business, Financial and Service Planning• Identify, through the business planning cycle, potential new service developments within their team. Where appropriate, implement and monitor these developments.
• Continually innovate and improve the quality of service provided by their team.
• To be an authorised financial signatory for the pharmacy department and act as a budget holder for the relevant pharmacy services
• To act as the budget holder for relevant financial budgets.
• Human Resource Management• Contribute to the pharmacy department’s workforce planning and support the Chief Pharmacist deliver services within the staffing budget.
• Responsible for ensuring that all Trust Human Resource Policy and procedures are applied in the managed section.
• Recruit, develop and motivate staff to maximise performance and delivery of service objectives and priorities.
• Supervise the development of staff in the managed section through performance management, objective setting and review in accordance with the Trust appraisal process.
• Ensure systems are in place to identify poor performance and that any individuals identified are appropriately supported and managed within Trust policies.
• Support HR investigations and panels for the Business Unit and the wider Trust as required.
• Quality Management and Clinical Governance• Document all incidents and risk assessments in the managed sections in the departmental risk register and oversee the delivery of any actions. Act as a final signatory for incident investigations and risks.
• Ensure broader risk management issues, such as Health and Safety at Work, COSHH, Safe use of equipment, Infection Control and Product Liability are addressed within the managed sections.
• Develop key performance indicators for the managed sections to demonstrate that all legal, professional and quality standards are met and to demonstrate quality improvement.
• Ensure all aspects of the managed sections meet agreed National or local Trust standards.
• Education and Training• Provides leadership and support to the Training and Education team to ensure that the development of education and training for technicians and support staff is in line with local, regional and national priorities.
• Ensures that all pharmacy staff working in the pharmacy service have received appropriate induction and ongoing training and education to perform their duties effectively.
• Undertakes an agreed programme of education and training to assist in the effective delivery of the responsibilities and duties expected of the post.
• Attend local and national education, training and development courses and keep up to date with the latest developments in hospital pharmacy and therapeutics.
• Research and Development• Support practice research within the department - identifying areas for research, acting as a research mentor, implementing findings and promoting publication of audit and research findings locally and nationally.
• Undertake and publish pharmacy practice research.
• Act as the lead within in the Department for Clinical Trials and undertake all aspects of operational management working closely with the Research and Development Team. Ensure all activities are managed in line with Good Clinical Practice GCP standards. Engage specialist clinical pharmacists where necessary for input into trial feasibility and pharmacy process.
• Work with the Aseptic Services Team to co-ordinate any clinical trials with aseptically prepared Investigational Medicinal Products IMPs.
• Pharmacy Practice• Undertake sufficient pharmacy practice to remain competent and to satisfy the requirements for mandatory professional development and registration with the General Pharmaceutical Council.
• Participates in the weekend and bank holiday rota.
