Hours per week: 35 Monday – Friday, normal working hours

This opening assignment is for 2 months

Basic DBS required for this role

A Mortuary Technician, experienced, qualified or currently training as a Mortuary Technician, is required to join the Bereavement Services Team. Assist and participate in the delivery of a range of high quality, efficient, customer focussed operational services in line with strategic ambitions and customer focussed services at Greenwich Public Mortuary.

Key responsibilities:

Maintain an up-to-date knowledge and awareness of recent developments in Pathology.
Develop and utilise specialist knowledge and experience related to the work undertaken.
Provide anatomical pathology assistance to colleagues and pathologists.
Admission, measuring and registration of the deceased ensuring they are identified, cared for and stored in accordance with HTA guidelines.
Receive referrals from internal service users and provide accurate information regarding time scales.
Assist colleagues with the delivery and maintenance of a high quality safe, efficient, and effective mortuary service.
Assist with mortuary provision outside of normal working hours.
Act in accordance with the Human Tissue Act 2004, any subsequent updates and all other relevant legislation, guiding principles and codes of practice as directed. These services include but are not limited to: maintaining sterile and hygienic conditions throughout the building including the cleaning all associated tools and equipment. Post mortems, stock control, maintaining records and implementing visual inspection of plant and equipment before use to ensure compliance to health and safety to assist with the delivery and management of the service.
Undertake duties relating to the reception, identification, storage and release of bodies, maintaining a register and ensuring that particular attention is paid to the security and return of valuables, and the conduct of persons visiting the Mortuary for the purpose of depositing or collecting bodies. Deal with members of the public in a sympathetic and caring nature when discussing all issues relating to the service.
The department holds a HTA license and encourages all staff to be UKDVI and AHCS registered.

Qualifications:

Experienced, qualified or currently training as a Mortuary Technician.
Hold or be work towards the Diploma in APT.



Experience:

Significant current practical mortuary/bereavement experience.
Previous experience of dealing with the public and being sensitive to cultural needs and dealing with the bereaved is also required.
Experience and knowledge of all practices including all types of PM examinations is welcomed.
Experience of working within a team in a Mortuary front-line service area within a local authority or the private sector and dealing with the public in a caring and courteous manner.



Knowledge:

Have an understanding of current mortuary practice and have knowledge of routine post-mortems, high risk cases, Coroner’s cases, forensic work including the documentation and legislation associated with death and organ retention.



Skills & Abilities:

Computer literate as the role can involve the use of Microsoft packages.
Able to use specialised tools, instruments, equipment and plant relating to the Mortuary activities.
Motivated, be able to maintain confidentiality and have excellent communication/interpersonal skills.
Well organised, be able to present to clinical staff and be able to accommodate the needs of a highly skilled team.
Willing to work towards an APT qualification.
Able to assist with mortuary provision outside of normal working hours.
