An opportunity has arisen for a Specialist Biomedical Scientist (BMS) at Band 6 (Monday to Friday) in the Cytology department of Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust at Oxford Road Campus. The post holder must be a Biomedical Scientist registered with the HCPC and will act to provide scientific services to patients and clients as an aid to clinical diagnosis. A Band 5 BMS may be considered if recruitment of Band 6 BMS is unsuccessful.


The post holder will join our friendly team at this busy teaching hospital which offers many specialist services. Our hospital has a bright and busy future; our staff has a proven record in providing high quality work, good teamwork and compassionate care for our patients. The post holder will assist and provide leadership, strategy and day to day support to the Diagnostic Cytopathology BMS and support teams.


The Cytopathology Department provides diagnostic service to MFT, Trafford General Hospital and the Christie Hospital. We have a BMS assistance at a wide range of FNA clinics including adequacy assessment at Head &Neck clinics. The department also offers a comprehensive specialist service, reporting on a wide range of samples including serous fluids, urine and respiratory samples. The department is the largest provider of synovial fluid and cervical cytology services in the North West.

The Cytopathology Department receives 4,000 diagnostic cytopathology samples and 2,000 synovial fluid samples per annum. The department offers a comprehensive specialist diagnostic cytopathology service, reporting on a wide range of samples including serous fluids, urine, respiratory and FNAs, including EUS clinics.

The post holder will work within the diagnostic cytopathology team. Routine work will involve specimen reception, preparation of a wide range of specimen types in a Category 3 containment laboratory, attendance at scheduled and ad hoc fine needle aspiration cytology clinics and participation in quality control of all sample types. They will provide scientific services to patients and clients as an aid to clinical diagnosis. Accuracy and attention to detail is essential.

• To adhere to the departmental sample acceptance policy when receiving samples into the department, investigating, reporting and resolving non-conformities, quality and safety issues.
• To work as a HCPC Registered Biomedical Scientist, following Standard Operational Procedures and investigating, reporting and resolving non-conformities, quality and safety issues.
• To interact with patients and visitors to the department as required.
• To be responsible for processing of specimens and analytical techniques in the Category 3 containment and preparation laboratory in accordance to standard operational protocols.
• To attend ad hoc and scheduled fine needle aspiration clinics and perform on-site and off-site specimen adequacy at scheduled clinics such as ENT, TGH and the Christie Hospital as required
• To perform internal quality control on diagnostic cytopathology on a rotational basis.
• To monitor and maintain appropriate stock levels, assisting with deliveries to the department and preparation of orders
• To handle samples of human tissue and fluids, including high-risk specimens.
• Assist clinicians at diagnostic cytopathology fine needle aspiration (FNA) clinics including out-patient, ward, operating theatre and radiology settings including preparation of direct spreads, fixed samples and obtaining material for ancillary testing as appropriate.
• Responsible for providing advice to clinicians about the need for repeat aspirations at FNA clinics if samples are deemed unsatisfactory after on-site evaluation
• Responsible for the performance of rapid staining and on-site adequacy assessment of FNA samples, including conveying adequacy results to the clinician in out-patient, ward, operating theatre and radiology settings
• Coordinate sample preparation and reagent preparation following department standard operating procedures.
