We are fully committed to having an inclusive workforce to reflect the communities we serve. We welcome flexible working patterns for all our vacancies, including job share, so please include clearly any information regarding your preferred working arrangements on your application.

Would you like to work in a team to help protect and improve the estuarine and coastal environment?

As technical officer, you’ll work within a team of specialists undertaking a wide range of new monitoring and assessment tasks. Your role is crucial to effective monitoring and assessment of our estuarine and coastal waters using a natural capital approach. You’ll provide technical support and enable the Environment Agency to carry out its marine data responsibilities.

You’ll support building our understanding of the quality and value of our natural assets, how they interact with the wider environment and pressures upon it and to provide information to inform environmental management decisions.

You’ll largely be office based, assisting marine specialists and advisors with understanding the condition and services provided by England's marine environment.

Tasks could range from advising area staff on practical procedures and strategies for marine monitoring activities, through to analysing and processing a range of marine health assessment parameters.

You’ll be involved in a range of projects and tasks, including:
• implementing improvements to how we collect, store, and share our marine biological data
• assessing the quality of England Natural Capital, including tool development
• provision of data, information, and evidence to support marine habitat restoration
• development and coordination of long-term national monitoring programmes
• supporting delivery of national monitoring programmes

You’ll have an inclusive incident management objective in your development plan, so we’ll support you to find an incident role to suit your needs and circumstances. Appropriate training will be given to support you in your role.

The team

You will work in the Coastal and Estuarine Assessment (CEA) Team, within National Monitoring. CEA provides a complete design, advice and assessment technical service supporting coastal and estuarine ecological protection and improvement.
The team provides operational, scientific, and technical support to local and national teams, and to external partners. Including providing information on what data tells us about the inshore environment, advice on marine ecological impacts and mitigation needs for marine large infrastructure projects.

Experience/skills required

In your capability-based answers please demonstrate your ability to:
• work flexibility with a willingness to work on a range of tasks
• communicate and work collaboratively within a dispersed team
• work effectively with people from a variety of backgrounds and cultures and actively encourage others to consider diversity issues in their work
• work independently to resolve data analysis problems
• lead technical discussions
• provide presentations to both internal and external audiences
• understand our role in marine environmental management
• understand estuarine and coastal environmental monitoring techniques
• produce work to time and with customers in mind.

Ideally, you’ll have the following experience and skills:
• Database management (ideally knowledge of the Agency’s WIMS and Biosys systems)
• GIS skills
• Coastal and estuarine environmental monitoring techniques
• Statistical skills for analysing ecological and water quality datasets
• Report writing
• Monitoring programme management
