The post-natal nurse is responsible for their own practice and therefore the post holder will be expected to maintain a high standard of professional expertise and to ensure that the highest standard of care is given to patients in their care.

Provide support and mentoring to less experienced practitioners, midwives, nurses and students to the required trust standards and competencies and to support colleagues in a multi-disciplinary team.

Take the leadership role in managing and organising obstetric patient’s pre and post regional and general anaesthesia.

Co-operate and liaise with all members of staff in the unit to endeavour to foster team spirit and ensure continuity of care.

Administer medications to women and babies.
• Care for patients in the Recovery Area on the post-natal ward developing skills in airway pain management and post-operative monitoring and intervention
• Assess, plan implement and evaluate care related to the individual needs of the woman
• Assist on wards or clinical areas as required to ensure they are smooth-running
• Act at all times in a reassuring and professional manner
• Uphold and maintain the philosophy, standards, policies and procedures required by the Maternity Directorate and the Trust
• Document the care given in the woman’s records and input data into the electronic record. Complete all necessary documentation, participating in the collection of relevant data for audit and efficiency monitoring
• Participate in standard setting, quality assurance and developments
• Maintain basic life support (BLS) skills.
