Your new role
This is a critical technical lead role working closely with the Head of Architecture and with key stakeholders at various levels within ITS and the wider University to ensure the delivery of exceptional IT service across the University. Using authorised Architecture Principles, Standards and Patterns and in line with the relevant Digital Strategy and Technology Roadmaps, the Solution Architect will be responsible for supporting the successful implementation of the University's new research information eco-system. The work will include designing, advising on and implementing an architecture that meets ITS governance standards, business requirements and fits within the time and budget envelopes of the project.
This role will work closely with academic and professional services colleagues to explore, define and implement the strategic roadmap for the required learning technologies across the institution.

  • Good understanding of the Education Technology (EdTech) sector and will proactively assess existing and emerging products and technologies against current and future business requirements.
  • Utilise their knowledge and judgement to prioritise stakeholder needs and manage expectations in accordance with institutional strategies and available resources - they will also influence these to better match the ever changing internal and external environments.
  • Responsible for Technical Leadership within the programme and projects to which assigned, collaborating with and influencing key stakeholders to ensure that architecture and design considerations are visible, opportunities exploited, and potential contentions and risks identified and mitigated.
  • Responsible for providing architectural deliverables and input to the Service Design Processes within IT Services.
  • Responsible for contributing to the process for design, capture and productionising architecture and technology standards and patterns for re-use to enable a standards-based approach.
  • Responsible for engaging with and attending Design Authority Board, (DAB), ensuring that designs are reviewed, and to contribute towards other designs at DAB.
  • Responsible for driving the eradication of technical debt related to new designs, underpinning a risk-based approach to design reviews, and ensuring that perfect does not become the enemy of good or better.
  • Responsible for designing, recommending, and implementing solutions that not only meet business requirements but also adhere to the standards and guidelines of the ITS strategy.
  • Engaging as a key member of the architecture team reporting to the Head of Architecture and Design.
  • Supporting project team members on all architectural and technology solution matters in an advisory capacity.
  • Providing support on other projects or systems as needed.
  • A detailed understanding of Digital and Technology Strategies, open standards-based architecture and using APIs.
  • A broad technical background in IT, covering operating systems, databases, integrations, cloud-based Software/Platform/Infrastructure-as-a-Service, business continuity and information security.
  • An understanding of the application and software development life cycle.
  • An understanding of release and change management.
  • An understanding of Agile and Product-based development.
  • An understanding of ITIL Service Management practices, processes, and procedures.
  • Experience of higher education environments in genera would be beneficial.
  • Experience of research systems specifically would be beneficial.
  • The ability to identify/understand complex business requirements and design/implement solutions to solve them and improve the user experience.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral, with an ability to communicate complex technical concepts simply and effectively to internal/external users and key stakeholders.
  • Effective interpersonal skills and collaborative style to include teamwork and team building ability.
  • Good attention to detail.
  • Ability to work under indirect supervision.
  • Technically creative and open-minded.
  • Flexible in a fast-paced dynamic environment.
  • A strong customer service orientation, clearly identifying and understanding business requirements in the context of wider organisation and long-term strategy.

  • Motivating others and providing clear direction regarding architectural principles and standards as they apply to the assigned domain.


What you'll need to succeed

  • Significant experience in a large scale, complex digital environment.
  • Significant experience influencing large-scale programmes of work and projects with often competing priorities and inter-related dependencies.
  • Experience or exposure to Architecture Repository Tools, (such as Orbus Infinity, LeanIX).
  • Experience or exposure to project management methodologies (such as PRINCE2).
  • Experience or exposure to agile/product delivery methodologies.
  • Where no equivalent qualification is held a proven track record of extensive and substantial work experience in a series of progressively more demanding and relevant roles will be required.
  • TOGAF certification or equivalent relevant experience is desirable.
  • Proven technical specialist knowledge and understanding in a relevant technical area (specialists will require advanced technical expertise).
  • Demonstrable understanding of architectural frameworks and methodology.
  • Demonstrable broad technical and architectural background in all facets of IT, including applications, data, infrastructure, (including Private and Public cloud), network and integrations.
  • Risk identification, articulation, mitigation, and other risk management understanding.
  • Knowledge of Higher Education in general and its environment would be beneficial.
  • A background in software development or solution architecture with appropriate technology/ coding skills and experience.
