An opportunity has arisen at SRFT for the appointment of a locum Consultant Upper GI & General Surgeon. The successful candidate will join an established team of 9 colorectal surgeons, 6 general surgeons with mixed specialty interest & 7 OesophagoGastric surgeons within the general surgery department.


The duration of the post is 1 year

The appointee will participate in the newly introduced acute gallbladder service, which involves daily theatre slots for emergency cholecystectomies. Other areas of sub-specialist interest such as laparoscopic management of CBD stones, benign hiatal surgery or emergency surgery would be desirable. It is the trust’s major priority to develop these services further by appointing experienced clinicians.

It is proposed that the appointees will provide 10 PAs per week (which will include outpatient clinics, operating theatre lists, and administration). The job plan will be a flexible job plan.

All Consultants will be allocated 1 core SPA per week for professional development (CPD), Job Planning, Appraisal, Mandatory Training, attendance at regular team meetings which will have a clinical governance aspect and participating in Audit.

Additional SPA time will be made available to consultants on the basis of evidenced need. Such allocation will be agreed and subsequently reviewed.

The appointee will be expected to participate fully in the provision of District General Hospital services to the residents of Salford.

The post-holders will be expected to take a lead role in ensuring delivery of a quality service. This will include the following:
• Implementing and ensuring compliance with Trust and national policies and procedures.
• Reviewing and allocating resources appropriately
• Reviewing and managing progress and improvement within the are



The post holders will be required to ensure that services are delivered within agreed parameters, covering clinical guidelines and national performance waiting time targets. There will be particular emphasis within this post on supporting the service to achieve the National Cancer Waiting time targets.

The post holders will be expected to contribute to the ongoing improvement of the clinical service.
