Job Summary The post holder will be required to gain experience and achieve technical competence in all areas of laboratory work under the supervision of qualified staff, and to complete in-service training as defined by the HCPC to become a Specialist State Registered Biomedical Scientist (B6). The post-holder will routinely perform in-depth investigations of clinical specimens, including high-risk specimens. They will undertake a range of interpretative analysis. Key responsibilities To work under supervision to analyse clinical specimens (both diagnostic and screening) and become competent in performing specialist and routine investigations and molecular diagnostic techniques. 2. To initially assess the analytical request and clinical information, in order to select the appropriate investigations from the range of analysis provided by the department. 3. To act as a specialist state registered Biomedical Scientist once qualified to perform a comprehensive range of routine, specialised and highly specialised analyses. 4. To process and analyse samples and quality control material, and report results in accordance with departmental protocols as specified in the laboratory method manuals and Standard Operating Procedures. 5. Under supervision will develop the competence to analyse samples and interpret specialised/complex results and to carry out further analysis on the basis of these results 6. To record the results of all investigations on the laboratory computer system and issue reports via technical validation 7. When qualified, use developed knowledge and interpersonal skills to provide specialist non-clinical advice and guidance to service users, in order to provide the best care for the patient. 8. To apply professional judgement, developed specialist knowledge and skills to technically difficult or complex situations within the laboratory.
