We welcome flexible working patterns for all our vacancies, including job share, so please include clearly any information regarding your preferred working arrangements on your application.

We create better places for people, wildlife and the environment. We put the climate emergency at the heart of everything we do and help society adapt to environmental challenges such as flooding, drought and sea level rise. We improve and protect the quality of our air, land and water by tackling pollution. We work with businesses to help them comply with environmental regulations and believe a healthy and diverse environment enhances people’s lives and contributes to sustainable and resilient economic growth.

This internal/external facing role is an amazing opportunity to contribute to our Geospatial development across the whole of the organisation, enabling our colleagues to deliver our challenging environmental ambitions.

We’re looking for two enthusiastic and motivated team members who can help us deliver our commitment to create a better environment places for people and wildlife. Your work will involve providing technical support and leadership in the use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and geospatial data. Providing support to colleagues who work on the systems we use (AGOL, ArcGIS, Enterprise, Easimap), you’ll assist with the maintenance of our central spatial data stores, ensure data quality is preserved and our metadata records are up to date, and provide communications support for the team.
This is an excellent opportunity to develop your technical skills with our GIS team, while supporting passionate users who are dedicated to improving our environment.

The team

The National GIS Team provide Geospatial services and lead on their use in the EA. We deliver through a variety of tools including Easimap2, our in-house GIS view and query tool, ArcMap Desktop and IM Portal, an ArcGIS Enterprise service configured and maintained for Incident Management. We also manage and support access to ArcGIS Online (AGOL). A joined-up, well-managed, modern suite of services is essential for our users.

Experience/skills required

You’ll be able to show that you care about the environment and have the technical skills, experience and drive to help your colleagues deliver their roles. Qualified to at least degree standard, or with equivalent work experience in a relevant discipline, you’ll possess advanced computer skills and experience of using ArcGIS tools including ArcGIS Desktop, ArcGIS Server and online services.

Experience using complex databases and tools such as FME would be an advantage, capabilities supporting customers and coaching others to use data effectively. With good analytical and problem-solving skills, and excellent written and verbal communication abilities, you’ll also be ready to deliver to agreed deadlines in a team environment.

Everyone starting in a new role with the Environment Agency will be welcomed into the team and given all the training and support you need to succeed. There are also fully funded opportunities to develop further academic/professional qualifications.
