We create better places for people, wildlife and the environment. We put the climate emergency at the heart of everything we do and help society adapt to environmental challenges such as flooding, drought and sea level rise. We improve and protect the quality of our air, land and water by tackling pollution. We work with businesses to help them comply with environmental regulations and believe a healthy and diverse environment enhances people’s lives and contributes to sustainable and resilient economic growth.

This internal/external facing role is an amazing opportunity to contribute to our Geospatial development across the whole of the organisation, enabling our colleagues to deliver our challenging environmental ambitions.

We’re looking for a GIS technical specialist with extensive user, data and information management experience using ESRI products with a proven record of effective delivery.

Our ideal candidate will combine a strong drive to modernise with a passion for improving the environment.

Working in the National GIS Team you will provide technical support of our spatial tools and systems to staff and services and work closely with our customers to ensure best use of our resources. You will be able to identify opportunities to reduce effort and duplication in the way we manage our geospatial data and platforms and work with other teams to ensure we have a common approach on data management activities such as metadata, data quality techniques, data standards and custodianship.

The team

The National GIS Team provide Geospatial services and lead on their use in the EA. We deliver through a variety of tools including Easimap2, our in-house GIS view and query tool, ArcMap Desktop and IM Portal, an ArcGIS Enterprise service configured and maintained for Incident Management. We also manage and support access to ArcGIS Online (AGOL). A joined-up, well-managed, modern suite of services is essential for our users.

Experience/skills required

To succeed in this role you’ll be able to show that you care about the environment and have the technical skills, experience and drive to help your colleagues deliver their roles.

We require:

Knowledge of ArcGIS Enterprise architecture

Experience publishing and managing data on ArcGIS Enterprise or ArcGIS Online

Experience in user management on ArcGIS Enterprise or ArcGIS Online

Experience in administration of ArcGIS portals

A thorough understating of the capabilities of the ArcGIS Platform

Capable of advising on GIS projects and working closely with suppliers and contractors.

Also experience with the ArcGIS Python API and Jupyter Notebooks would be beneficial.

Everyone starting in a new role with the Environment Agency will be welcomed into the team and given all the training and support you need to succeed. There are also fully funded opportunities to develop further academic/professional qualifications.
