Summary

Leeds Vascular Institute (LVI) was formed in 2005 with the merger of previously independent units at Leeds General Infirmary (LGI) and St James University Hospital (SJUH) and provides both secondary and tertiary vascular services for the region, including a supra-regional paediatric vascular service. In 2013 the LTHT formed a vascular partnership with the Mid-Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust and all elective and emergency inpatient vascular surgery for the two Trusts is carried out at the LGI. The surgeons of the LVI are responsible for the early management of abdominal and thoracic trauma for the Leeds Major Trauma Centre, supported by the general and thoracic surgeons from SJUH when necessary. The Leeds Vascular Institute is based at Leeds General Infirmary (LGI) and serves a population of 780,000. There are many supra-regional and regional services at LTHT which also require vascular surgical input. LGI is a 1103 bed hospital based in the centre of Leeds and has an international reputation for its expertise in a range of specialist services for which the hospital is a regional centre. Central to the site is the Jubilee Building, which contains many services dedicated to helping critically ill patients including those with major trauma, brain injury and heart disease. The Trauma & Related Services directorate (of which LVI is a part) provides care for approximately 20,000 in-patients and 110,000 out-patients on an annual basis. The catchment area of the population is approximately 780,000 but with a Major Trauma Network & tertiary referral population of 5.4 million from Yorkshire is covered. Our aim at LVI is to provide the best evidence-based patient-centred care for people with vascular disease and deliver excellent training in a supportive working environment.
