A Vacancy at The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust.

Junior Clinical Fellow in Surgery - Breast

Junior Clinical Fellow in Surgery - Plastics/Sarcoma

Fixed term for six months with the option to extend to one year. Start date: August 2024.

The Breast and Plastics/Sarcoma Junior Clinical Fellow posts are particularly appropriate for applicants who are approaching core surgical training. Candidates who have completed foundation training are welcomed to apply. Our Trust Grades have a high success rate in subsequent application for core surgical training posts.

These posts are intended for a candidate who wishes to gain surgical experience in the areas of breast and plastics/sarcoma and reconstructive surgery. There will also be the opportunity to gain some exposure to soft tissue sarcoma and melanoma cancer.

The Royal Marsden NHS Trust has a well-established surgical program across all surgical specialities, and this is an excellent opportunity to increase experience in surgical oncology. The candidate is expected to participate in the departmental teaching and journal club, and there may be opportunities to present at these activities.

The posts will be based at the Royal Marsden site in Sutton.
• Theatres

The post holders will have plenty of opportunity to participate in theatre sessions where they can assist in a range of operations in breast, plastics, and sarcoma. Participation in daily ward rounds and the management of post operative patients is undertaken.
• Clinics

The Breast post holder will be expected to attend weekly rapid diagnostic and results clinics and to contribute to these clinics accordingly. The Plastics/Sarcoma post holder attends outpatients’ clinics.
• On-Call

The rota covers all surgical patients and evaluation of surgical problems arising in medical patients at the Sutton site during daytime hours. The standard hours are from 7.30am – 5pm from Monday to Friday with no night time or weekend working.
• Other

Attendance at the multi-disciplinary meeting and journal club.

Wound reviews and hotline calls.

Attendance at the general surgical journal club.

Opportunities to undertake research, service improvement projects and audits under the supervision of consultants.

The post holders for Breast and Plastics/Sarcoma are expected to cross cover each other for annual and study leave when required and to perform additional duties in occasional emergencies and unforeseen circumstances.

The postholder undertakes exceptionally to be available for irregular commitments outside normally rostered duties as are essential for continuity of patient care.

The Royal Marsden is a world leader in cancer research, treatment and education. Together with our academic partner, The Institute of Cancer Research (ICR), we are the largest comprehensive cancer centre in Europe and the only National Institute of Health Research (NIHR) Biomedical Research Centre specialising in cancer in the UK.

Our mission is to continue to make a national and international contribution to cancer research and treatment, so that more people are cured and quality of life is improved for those with cancer. The Royal Marsden therefore plays an important role in championing change and improvement in cancer care through research and innovation, education and leading-edge treatment.

We have a reputation for delivering high quality performance. We were ranked joint first in the CQC national inpatient survey results, above average in national cancer patient experience survey and ranked first amongst teaching hospitals in the UK for our staff survey results.

Predominantly the Trust’s workload is from within the South West and West London Cancer Networks but, as a specialist cancer, the Trust has a high out-of-area referral rate for rare cancers, recurrent disease and treatment-related problems including international referrals. The Trust operates a shared care model with St George’s Healthcare NHS Trust for paediatric cancer.

These posts are intended for a candidate who wishes to gain surgical experience in the areas of breast and plastics/sarcoma and reconstructive surgery. There will also be the opportunity to gain some exposure to soft tissue sarcoma and melanoma cancer.
