The Role
We are looking for a Senior Commercial Manager working initially on the Joint venture Havant Thicket Reservoir Project this is a
large environmental project designed to safeguard water resources for the Southeast. You will be working within a flexible
organisation where self-motivated and practical problem solvers will thrive.
Key Roles and Responsibilities:
Contract Management:
* Lead contract negotiations for civil engineering projects, ensuring adherence to project specifications and regulatory
requirements.
* Oversee contract execution, including change orders and claims management.
* Monitor subcontractor agreements and performance.
Financial Management:
* Develop, review, and manage project budgets for civil engineering projects.
* Monitor project financials, including costs, revenue, and profit margins.
* Implement cost control measures to optimize project profitability.
Risk Assessment and Mitigation:
* Identify potential risks specific to civil engineering projects and implement risk management strategies.
* Maintain a proactive approach to risk mitigation, including insurance and contingency planning.
Client Relationship Management:
* Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, engineering consultants, and regulatory authorities.
* Address client concerns and maintain open lines of communication throughout project lifecycles.
Team Leadership:
* Supervise a team of commercial professionals involved in civil engineering projects.
* Provide guidance and support to the team, fostering collaboration and efficiency.
* Encourage ongoing training and development for team members.
Compliance and Legal Matters:
* Ensure compliance with civil engineering industry standards and regulations.
* Collaborate with legal counsel on contract negotiations and legal matters related to projects.
Performance Analysis:
* Analyse performance data specific to civil engineering projects to identify areas for improvement.
* Develop and implement strategies to enhance project efficiency and profitability.
Documentation and Reporting:
* Maintain accurate records and documentation for civil engineering projects.
* Prepare and present regular reports on project financials and performance to senior management and clients.
Quality Assurance and Civil Engineering Standards
* Ensure that civil engineering projects meet quality standards and specifications.
* Implement quality control measures to deliver high-quality work, meeting engineering best practices.
Cost Estimation for Civil Engineering Projects:
* Collaborate with the estimating team to prepare accurate cost estimates for civil engineering projects.
* Participate in the development of competitive project bids.
Vendor and Supplier Management:
* Evaluate and negotiate contracts with civil engineering suppliers, subcontractors, and equipment providers.
* Monitor the performance of vendors and subcontractors.
Strategic Planning for Civil Engineering Projects:
* Contribute to the development of the company's strategic direction for civil engineering projects.
* Provide insights on market trends, opportunities, and potential risks specific to the civil engineering sector.
Health, Safety, and Environmental Compliance (HSE):
* Ensure strict compliance with health, safety, and environmental regulations within the context of civil engineering projects.
* Promote a culture of safety and environmental responsibility in project execution.
Sustainability Initiatives in Civil Engineering:
* Support sustainability efforts within civil engineering projects, such as sustainable sourcing, materials, and construction
practices.
Continuous Improvement in Civil Engineering Operations:
* Identify opportunities for process improvement and cost-saving initiatives specific to civil engineering projects.
* Implement best practices to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of civil engineering operations.
What we are looking for
* A bachelor's degree in civil engineering, construction management, business administration, or a related field provides a
strong foundation for a career in commercial management in civil engineering.
* Demonstrable experience of working as a commercial manager within the civil engineering construction industry preferably on
large earthworks projects.
* Experience in Design & Build Contracts
* Understanding and experience in NEC4 Contracts
* Strong computer literacy and good working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite
* Good commercial awareness with effective influencing and negotiating skills, as well as an aptitude to develop emerging and new
client relationships.
* Experience of managing and mentoring Quantity surveyors.
* Excellent knowledge of current civil engineering legislation as well as Health & Safety and Environmental legislation.
* Highly developed professional communication and negotiation skills, including writing and presentation of reports, preparing
business management documents, and presenting information in meetings with clients and other parties.
* The ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
* The ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in both mathematical or diagrammatic form and deal with
several abstract and concrete variables.
* Demonstrable ability to work well under pressure and to tight deadlines supported by strong organisational skills.
* Full UK Driving Licence is also required.
