Summary
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a band permanent band 6 amputee physiotherapist to join our team at the Amputee rehab unit ( ARU ). We are looking for a dynamic and passionate individual who is keen to be part of a close knit team with an overarching MDT ethos within the therapy team, part of Guys and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust.
This opportunity is for someone ideally with experience in amputee rehabilitation as a Band 5 or Band 6. If you think this could be you, we would welcome your application!
The successful candidate is required to be a good leader and excellent team member, with amputee rehabilitation experience at Band 5 or 6 level, ideally with an understanding of and experience within the SE London Amputee Pathway.
They will have some knowledge of lower limb prosthetics with experience in the prescription of prosthetic componentry and providing prosthetic rehabilitation.
The successful candidate would be accountable for their clinical practice and have experience of aspects of clinical governance such as audit development and completion. The successful candidate will have opportunities for internal and external training and development. You will be supported by the Band 7 Amputee Physiotherapist.
To be able to assess, formulate a problem list and treatment plan, along with SMART goal setting for patients who have undergone limb amputation(s) who wish to be considered for prostheses.
To be able to use all early walking aids as a form of assessment and treatment for lower limb amputees.
To be able to assess and treat accordingly residual limb oedema, with clinical reasoning for treatment choice.
To be able to assess pain (residual limb, phantom and referred) and decide appropriate course of action.
To be professionally and legally responsible and accountable for all aspects of own work including knowledge of indications and precautions of chosen techniques/equipment provision, in line with National and trust guidelines, protocols and pathways where they exist.
To provide written and verbal handover to your job share regarding all aspects of your role (clinical and non-clinical) on a weekly basis.
To consult properly with senior staff regarding patients with particular problems wherever they receive their main rehabilitation.
To deputise for the senior physiotherapist when absent regarding day to day management of the prosthetic physiotherapy service. To understand own professional and clinical boundaries and seek advice and help when appropriate.

The Amputee rehab unit( ARU) is a 12 bedded unit based in Kennington ,we sit within the Therapies and Rehabilitation directorate. Our patients are transferred from acute hospital wards and stay with us for up to 7 weeks as they progress through their rehabilitation milestones. Our caseload is complex and varied, seeing a rise in multiple limb loss and trauma amputations as well as our PVD and diabetic amputees. Onsite services include a minimum of twice daily rehabilitation, tailored to the individual . This can include physiotherapy, occupational therapy, group rehabilitation sessions, psychological rehabilitation and health promotion and pain management.
We are aligned with the Regional Rehabilitation Centre: Bowley Close, which continues life-long amputee care and rehabilitation post discharge. We provide specialist rehabilitation nursing including an enabling care approach and specialist wound care skills.
To provide specialist autonomous clinical management of patients who have under gone amputation.
To participate in the referral process to ensure appropriate referrals are being made and accepted and that the effectiveness of decision outcomes are reviewed.
Pre-discharge from the ARU to organise timely follow up and review appointments as clinical need indicates
To liaise with the prosthetic MDT and agree joint prosthetic goals and treatment plans.
Have a good understanding of lower limb prosthetics and sound clinical reasoning to ensure the most suitable prosthetic prescriptions for lower limb unilateral and multiple limb loss patients.
To use recognised and validated outcome measures in line with local policies.
To carry a designated case load, be able to prioritise case load efficiently taking into account clinical and service needs. Aid the band 5 physiotherapist to achieve this and manage their own case load.
To demonstrate an advanced level of clinical decision making to undertake appropriate assessment and to develop, implement and evaluate specialised physiotherapeutic and prosthetic treatment programmes and ensure the MDT are informed of outcomes/management plans.
Advise, guide and teach junior staff and students regarding assessment and management of patients and other aspects of clinical care.
To understand the expected standard of physiotherapy carried out by junior staff and students working in the department and strive for all members of the team to achieve this.
