We are looking to appoint a Sociological Review Fellow to start on 2nd September 2024 with the primary aim of completing a substantial writing project, normally a monograph based on a successfully completed PhD.
Sociology at Keele is located in the School of Social Sciences and Research Institute of Humanities and Social Sciences. The majority of members of the Sociology group are also members of the Keele Institute for Social Inclusion (KISI). Applicants may note that Keele’s sociological research culture offers particular expertise in: social theory, race and ethnicity, cultural sociology, digital sociology, social inequalities, urbanism, and globalisation. The successful candidate would be expected to liaise with, and provide support to the Editorial Office of the Sociological Review.
The successful candidate must hold a PhD in Sociology or related discipline, be able to demonstrate their excellent, rigorous and innovative research ability, and evidence their competence to carry out the project in a timely manner. Good interpersonal skills are also essential.
In return, you will receive a mentoring package with a strong emphasis on early career development also a generous allowance of up to £1,500 will be made available for conference and fieldwork. You will be situated in Sociology at Keele and benefit from the University’s research environment, including the Institute for Social Inclusion, which will provide opportunities to engage in joint writing projects and / or collaborative funding applications with established members of Faculty. You will also have the opportunity to develop your own teaching experience by contributing to undergraduate and / or postgraduate teaching in Sociology at Keele, for example, through specialist guest lectures on the modules currently offered.
The post is funded by the Sociological Review Foundation Limited as part of its ongoing commitment to Early Career Researchers. The purpose of the Fellowship is to provide early career sociologists and social anthropologists with the opportunity of spending a year writing their first monograph length book. Your PhD will have been awarded in sociology, social anthropology or a cognate discipline within the last 24 months. You should be able to demonstrate the ability to write for publication by having at least one piece of work from your PhD published or accepted for publication. You will be granted access to 'The Foundations of British Sociology: The Sociological Review Archive’, which you will be encouraged to use this resource if appropriate.
Applicants are required to clearly outline the scope of this writing project, its importance, and relevance in a letter of application for the post. This letter of application should include a full writing plan and timeline, signalling potential venues for publication and conference presentation of work. Where applicant’s plan includes writing a monograph, a book proposal should be included, plus suggested publishers. Finally, please submit a full CV with your application.
