Band 3 Phlebotomist

Full Time - 37.5 hours per week

We are seeking an experienced phlebotomist, who has completed the Care Certificate and has a minimum of 6 months phlebotomy experience to join our Phlebotomy team in Cancer and Haematology Outpatients.

This role requires the successful candidate to provide phlebotomy cover to adult patients attending Cancer and Haematology Outpatient clinics, pre-chemotherapy treatment and other specialities across the trust.

You need to be enthusiastic and hardworking with effective communication and people skills. You will need to able to work carefully under pressure and in addition to proven venepuncture skills, possess good computer skills with knowledge of Electronic Patient Record (EPR) essential.

The successful candidate will be expected to complete our local training and competence assessments within the first 2 months following appointment.

The role requires a flexible approach to duties and the capacity to remain calm in a busy environment. An essential requirement of the post is an ability to work as part of a team without direct supervision and to deal with patients in a confidential, professional, and sensitive manner.
Suitable applicants will be willing to learn, have an initiative-taking approach to service development and contribute effectively to patient care.

The role of the Phlebotomist is to ensure that blood samples are taken as per Trust guidelines whilst collaborating with colleagues to deliver a safe and efficient service to patients.
• To collaborate with the clinical teams and support staff to collect blood samples from patients
• Undertake agreed clinical and non-clinical tasks following training, ensuring referral to appropriate trained staff as required
• To assist with the provision of high-quality service for staff and patients
• To ensure all patient blood samples are taken efficiently and safely
• To provide support to other Phlebotomists within the team
• Responsible for the tracking and recording of samples to ensure that relevant information is available for safety audits.
• Responsible for monitoring and replenishing of medical stock
• Support members of staff in their orientation to the department and role
• To be Advanced Non-Touch Technique (ANTT) compliant and know the five moments of hand hygiene
• To maintain a professional appearance and comply with uniform standards
• Contribute towards the provision of a safe environment for patients, staff, and visitors
• Understand and adhere to all Trust polices, guidelines and procedures in particular, Health and Safety, Fire Safety, Waste Management and Resuscitation policies
• Always apply universal precautions to minimise the risks of cross infection in the department.
• Ensure that all equipment is stored correctly and that the department and storage areas are kept clean and tidy
• Report any breakages or malfunction of equipment the relevant department and Senior Nurse.
• Work in a flexible way across the clinical areas to ensure cover is maintained during periods of leave and Bank Holiday cover.
• Ensure all incidents are reported on the Trust incident reporting system, Ulysses.
