The Pathology Directorate is seeking a responsible and enthusiastic individual to work in a joint role, as an Administrative Assistant working on the pathology front reception, and as a Phlebotomist, at Blackpool Victoria Hospital. In this full-time position, the successful applicant would be required to rotate between these roles as per the demands of the service.

The successful candidate will be able to work flexibly to cover working hours between 07:30-18:00 Mon-Fri as well as occasional weekend work on a rotational basis

In the reception part of the role, you will be the first point of contact for patients and non-pathology staff visiting the department. You will assist patients attending for blood tests, book new appointments and receive pathology samples for analysis by the laboratories.

In the phlebotomy part of the role, you will be required to perform venepuncture and capillary blood collection from patients in Outpatients, clinics and wards in the hospital

You will need basic computer skills and be able to meet the physical demands of the job which include standing, bending, walking and pushing phlebotomy trolleys for the duration of the shift.

Previous experience in a customer/patient liaison role, or as a hospital or community phlebotomist, is desirable but not essential, as full training will be provided.


• Open/close front reception at the start/end of the working day
• Answer patient telephone queries
• Book patients onto Sangix for blood test appointments
• Act as the first point of contact for patients and other visitors to pathology, ensuring a well presented, polite, courteous, and understanding demeanour
• Ensure consumables are adequately replenished throughout the day, and distribute stock to clinical areas
• Take receipt of pathology samples from other hospital wards and departments
• Transport samples to CSR/laboratories as required
• Check fridge temperatures and report and discrepancies to senior staff
• Receive samples from the pneumatic POD system
• Liaise with couriers to send samples to off-site laboratories
• Cleaning and general housekeeping tasks
• Removal of waste from the department via the appropriate waste streams
• Safe collection of blood samples by venepuncture or capillary sampling.
• Preparation of equipment and the correct disposal of clinical waste and sharps.
• Perform duties in accordance with Trust and Directorate Health and Safety at work Policies.
• Training: Maintenance of personal training log in conjunction with Section Leader
