Neurovascular Fellow Advert Job Overview: Applications are invited for the position of Royal College of Surgeons Accredited Senior Clinical Fellow in Neurovascular Neurosurgery, at Leeds General Infirmary. The successful candidate will join an existing world-class neurovascular team, consisting of neurosurgeons, interventional neuroradiologists and clinical nurse specialists. WYAAT is the acute sector arm of the West Yorkshire and Harrogate Health and Care Partnership, one of the largest integrated care systems in the country. The role sits within the neurosurgical department, which has three inpatient wards, a neuro HDU and dedicated neuro ICU. There are between three and six theatre lists per day, including dedicated neurosurgical acute and paediatric neurosurgical theatres. The department of Neurosurgery in Leeds provides leading Neurovascular care. The service is consultant-led and delivered, through dedicated subspecialty services. The Neurovascular services have very strong links with Neurology, Neuroradiology and Neuropathology (including cytogenetics) and Leeds University. The post offers training in the full range of neurovascular pathology, including: AVM, aneurysms, moya moya, dural AV fistulae and cavernoma. Many previous post-holders have gone on to successfully secure substantive neurovascular consultant appointments. Main Duties of the Role: General This post is formally recognised by the Royal College of Surgeons, as part of the Senior Clinical Fellow Scheme. The fellowship is designed for Neurosurgical clinicians at the end of training to provide all aspects of subspecialty training in Vascular Neurosurgery. The fellow will be fully immersed in the Neurovascular service. This will include a thorough grounding in the clinical management, investigation and surgical techniques for optimally managing all varieties of vascular lesions. There are further opportunities to develop a research interest and also to attend neurovascular radiology theatres. Operating The Fellow will gain independent competencies in dealing with acute and elective intra-cranial aneurysms, AVMs, cavernomas and dural AV Fistulae. Non-Operative The Fellow will attend specialist clinics and the Multidisciplinary meeting to gain a thorough understanding of the management of vascular lesions. The Fellow will be expected to maintain both Departmental and national databases, such as the national AVM Registry and UK & Ireland Subarachnoid Haemorrhage Database. Out Of Hours The post-holder will participate in the Neurosurgical out-of-hours rota which includes cover of adult and paediatric neurosurgical conditions, at a registrar level. Organisational Overview: Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust is one of the largest NHS Trusts in the UK. The Neurosurgical Department sits within the Neurosciences CSU, which also includes: neurology, stroke medicine, orthopaedic spinal surgery and pain services. The Department caters to a catchment population of in excess of 3 million people. The vascular neurosurgery team are experienced and offer the full range of surgical approaches. Theatres are well-resourced and this includes: Zeiss Kinevo microscopes with ICG video angiography, Flow 800 post ICG analysis, fluorescein video angiography, Micro Doppler USS, intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring, minimally invasive craniotomies (including eyebrow and LSO), endoscope-assisted aneurysm clipping. Leeds has a strong reputation for training, indeed previous post-holders have gone on to successfully secure neurovascular consultant posts. The senior medical staff are friendly and approachable and will provide career advice/support, educational supervision and are all happy to be directly approached by enthusiastic trainees. Leeds Neurosurgery is a fantastic department in which to work and many of our former trainees now work here, as consultants! Job Description Text: This post is formally recognised by the Royal College of Surgeons, as part of the Senior Clinical Fellow Scheme. The fellowship is designed for Neurosurgical clinicians at the end of training to provide all aspects of subspecialty training in Vascular Neurosurgery. This post is not suitable for more junior applicants, who are not yet at a CCT or peri-CCT standard. The post is structured such that the training will be planned and delivered over a 12-month period and is therefore not suitable for trainees looking for a briefer fellowship placement. The Fellow will be expected to keep a portfolio of their activities and educational progress, utilising a recognised portfolio (eg ISCP). The Fellow is strongly encouraged to involve themselves in the current research within the Department, including actively recruiting patients to trials such as the SCIL IL1-ra trial, CARE study etc. The Department is led by 15 Substantive and 2 Locum Consultant Neurosurgeons. The Neurosurgeons work with the Orthopaedic Spinal Surgeons to provide an integrated spinal service. The Neurosurgical Consultants each have a comprehensive general Neurosurgical commitment, as well as particular subspecialty interests.
