Edinburgh Medical School: Biomedical Sciences wishes to appoint an Academic Track Lecturer in Biomedical Informatics to support and develop teaching and research linked to the undergraduate Dual Award Honours programmes in Integrative Biomedical Sciences and Biomedical Informatics jointly developed with Zhejiang University, China. The post-holders will spend up to 12 weeks per annum on teaching-related activities at the University of Edinburgh-Zhejiang University (ZJE) Institute based at the Zhejiang University International Campus in Haining, China (http://zje.intl.zju.edu.cn/). Candidates with experience in biomedical informatics, particularly data science, computational and mathematical modelling and/or systems biology are particularly encouraged to apply.

The Opportunity:

The ZJE Institute is the largest and most successful transnational research and education partnership of the University of Edinburgh and one of the leading Joint Institutes in China. As a member of the team based at the University of Edinburgh you will be part of an exciting, vibrant research-led academic community offering opportunities to work with leading international academics whose visions are shaping tomorrow’s world.

The appointee will be expected to develop and maintain an independent research programme that complements research priorities across the Research Institutes hosted in Edinburgh Medical School, College of Medicine & Veterinary Medicine and the ZJE Institute, including in educational research. Establishing collaborative research programmes at the ZJE Institute is strongly encouraged. Your collaborative research potential will be evidenced by publications in leading international peer-reviewed journals and the ability or potential to obtain external grant funding.

The appointee will be involved in the development and delivery of the Dual Award Honours programmes in Biomedical Informatics that are delivered, in English, at the International Campus of Zhejiang University at Haining in China by staff based at the University of Edinburgh, Zhejiang University and the ZJE Institute. The appointee will be expected to spend up to 12 weeks per annum on teaching-related activities in China. The appointee will develop a teaching portfolio depending on their expertise and experience and may also contribute to postgraduate and other undergraduate programmes at ZJE and the University of Edinburgh.

The post is aimed at individuals of the highest potential who have begun to establish a reputation for quality research in their discipline and who have a proven commitment to university level learning and teaching. The post requires a degree and a PhD in a subject relevant to Biomedical Sciences or Biomedical Informatics. Experience in teaching in a Higher Education Institution is a requirement. The post-holder will be mentored towards gaining research grant support and in the development of teaching and wider academic leadership, management, engagement and knowledge exchange.

The post is available with immediate effect, and it is expected that successful applicants will be in post by no later than 1st August 2024. The tenure-track post is for five years with the expectation, subject to a satisfactory formal review at the end of year three, that the post-holder will move to a standard University academic open-ended contract at the end of year five. Appointments at Senior Lecturer level will be considered for suitably qualified candidates.

Applications including a detailed CV, a one-page outline of a proposed research programme and a one-page statement explaining teaching experience and vision should be made online at https://www.ed.ac.uk/human-resources/jobs to meet the closing date. In addition to the formal interview, all interviewees will be required to give a presentation to the panel. Further information will be provided along with the invitation to interview.
