School of Medicine, Ninewells Medical School Full-time/ Fixed-Term for 3 years

Grade: National minimum wage as applicable 2 positions available.

We are recruiting for an exceptional individual to join us as a Modern Apprentice (Life Science and Related Science Industry) within our operations team, technical cohort. The remit of this Modern Apprentice position is to cover a spectrum of activities related to supporting the School of Medicine. The main activities will focus on the provision of technical support for the delivery of practical laboratory/clinical teaching and research laboratories within the school. This is a fixed-term appointment for 3 years.

Modern Apprenticeship

A modern apprenticeship is a work-based training programme that leads to an industry approved qualification. Training is mostly on the job which means that Modern Apprentices gain the right mix of skills and knowledge. It is intended that by the end of the 3 years the successful candidate will achieve a work based SVQ in Life Science and Related Science Industry and an HNC in Applied Science (this will be done part time in conjunction with D&A college).

Personal Specification

You will be capable of taking personal responsibility for your own work and for using your initiative effectively within the remit of the post, with the ability to be able to deal with changing priorities. You will possess good written and verbal communication skills, and an ability to interact positively with people at all levels in a dynamic academic environment. Training will be provided to allow you to deal with a diverse range of staff and students requirements.

Your priorities will include:

  • Support colleagues with all aspects of technical requirements across all teaching areas in the school including making solutions/animal tissue models, setting out/calibrating equipment, and supporting students in class.
  • Assist colleagues in maintaining core equipment across the research laboratories within the school.
  • Under instruction and with direction complete routine safety tests to meet legal compliance and School policy including testing airflow, oxygen depletion monitors, fume hoods and -80°C freezer alarms etc.
  • In conjunction with others provide sterile laboratory services across the medical school, including media prep and the collection and return of glass wear, plastics, and other sterile consumables to all lab areas.
  • With support from the senior teaching technicians produce risk assessments and SOPs for all work carried out within the teaching laboratories

Who we're looking for:

  • You will hold a minimum of 1 Scottish Higher in a science subject plus English at Nat 5, or equivalent.
  • Competent IT skills and use of Microsoft Office Packages.
  • Strong numeracy skills.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Good organisational skills with ability to follow direction and a good eye for detail.
