Personal Assistant for guy in North Tyneside £11.44 per hour, two 15 hr shifts per week

I’m a 57 year old ex-professional, openly gay man. I’m a wheelchair user, have seizures, am hearing impaired and have had a full-time team of Personal Assistants through Direct Payments for decades.

I'm looking for one or two people (men only I'm afraid - cis or trans both welcome) to join my existing team of independent living personal assistants. I have full-time assistance at the moment: from when I wake up to when I go to bed. The shifts are about 15 hours long. I'm looking to cover one or two days per week – 15hours or 30 hours (ish) depending if you did one or two days.

It would really suit someone with other work or interests, as you could get nearly a week’s work out of the way in 2 days and spend the other 5 days on your passion projects. I’ve had artists, I'm definitely not looking for previous experience, and it's not a job suitable for people coming from a 'caring' background. I’m passionate about the social model of disability. My package of support is about enabling choice and control for me as a disabled person. I really do need staff who are gay-positive – I go to gay/ bear/ gay deaf events. Oh, and a driving license (to drive my Motability car).

I have a small affectionate well-behaved chihuahua. Training given obviously on how to support me when I have seizures – just practical stuff.

What kind of person I’m looking for?
Someone...· Trustworthy, reliable and responsible, discreet and respect the importance of confidentiality, committed to disabled people having control over our own lives; conscientious, able to work to instruction, capable of assisting quietly and efficiently, sensitive to different needs in different environments, observant, able to know when direct assistance is needed, and able to work flexibly.· Able to work on your own initiative, able to work in a non-
homophobic manner, able to support me during localised or
generalised seizures (training will be given)
able to push me in my manual wheelchair (including up ramps),· Able to use a hoist (training will be given), able to drive my car (must have a clean driving license), able to carry out domestic duties efficiently (e.g. cooking and cleaning), and able to carry out assistance with the minimum of fuss and supervision. What does it involve?
Here’s a list of what the role involves. Its not exhaustive.· To work to enable me as a disabled person by providing self-directed support, on a one-to-one basis, in my own home, workplace and community.· To work to ensure I am able to carry out normal day-to-day activities (.e.g. doing work-type stuff, education, socialising), and to ensure I am safe at all times.· To carry out domestic duties. I can’t do them myself.· To enable me to travel, driving my motability car and working away from home when required (I like to visit friends and go away sometimes)· To provide a wide range of physical assistance when required such as lifting objects, assisting in the use of daily items, some personal care, use of a hoist (training given). To push me in my manual wheelchair when needed.· To assist me to communicate when unable to do so unaided, and assist me to remember facts, appointments etc. (Sometimes I can’t find the right words, or after seizures I can’t talk for a while afterwards. I also have a hearing impairment – I think the universe gave me that one just for a final flourish!)· To work in an anti-racist, anti-sexist and non-homophobic manner.· Occasional personal care is also part of the job, such as assistance to shower.
This post is exempt from the Equality Act 2010, Schedule 9, Paragraphs 1 – 4), and is exempt from the working time regulations due to the need for continuous cover.
