Summary

PURPOSE OF THE POST

The Health and Safety Team have responsibility for drafting procedures, providing health and safety advice and support, staff training and monitoring a wide range of health and safety compliance across the College. The Health and Safety Team are part of the Estates Department.

The post holder will support the Health & Safety Manager in the development, maintenance and implementation of a wide variety of health and safety management systems and initiatives within the College Group and will ensure legal compliance in all things relating to Health & Safety legislations.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

● To promote the highest possible standards in health and safety, customer care and equal opportunities practices for the benefit of learners, staff and the wider College community.
● To assist in the implementation of the College Health and Safety Policy and associated procedures, providing advice, guidance and training to staff to enable them to implement the arrangements.
● To assist in the development of systems to monitor compliance with health and safety legislation, policies and procedures and implementation of health and safety audits.
● In supporting the relevant client group, lead on the following:
o Environmental management issues such as arrangements for the disposal of hazardous waste.
o Arrangements for environmental monitoring for dust, noise and fume etc.
o Machinery safety, particularly providing advice and guidance to staff on guarding, maintenance and inspection.
o Arrangements for the health and safety aspects of work placement.
o Participation in programmed workplace inspections, systematic audits and assist in the development of action plans in order to improve on the health and safety arrangements throughout the College organisation.
● Advise and lead on all aspects of Fire and Emergency Evacuation procedures.
● To assist in the development and maintenance of health and safety records.
● To deliver staff health and safety training and provide advice and guidance to staff and students in conjunction with the L&D annual plan.
● To work effectively with appropriate College staff, as required, in the development of plans and ad hoc initiatives.
● To support the College’s Health and Wellbeing agenda.
● To maintain appropriate effective working relationships with external bodies including the HSE and the Association of Colleges.
● To support the Health & Safety Manager in the collation, drafting and presentation of the H&S papers for the termly H&S Committee Meetings and attendance thereof.
● To assist, develop, use & maintain digital based systems for recording health and safety information including documentation / templates / inspections / accident reporting / record keeping / third party systems (worknest).

OFFERS OF WORK

Essential Attainments:
● NEBOSH Certificate in Occupational Safety and Health or any
equivalent level 3 health and safety qualification.
● Membership of the International Institute of Risk Safety Management (IIRSM) or Institution of Safety and Health (IOSH)
● Ability to maintain confidentiality in all aspects of work.
● A comprehensive knowledge of health and safety legislation.
● A thorough understanding of the risk assessment process.
● Experience in developing procedures to ensure compliance with legislation and good practice provided by authoritative bodies.
● A sound knowledge of environmental monitoring and machinery safety.
● Experience in the delivery of staff training.
● Previous experience in carrying out health and safety related activities.
● Demonstrable experience of managing a high and varied caseload.
● Experience of using Microsoft Office and Google applications.
● Excellent organisational skills and the ability to work to deadlines and within demanding timeframes.
● Ability to communicate effectively and diplomatically with all of our customers, which includes members of staff and the general public.
● Display an excellent telephone manner and flair for high levels of customer service.
● Able to demonstrate a customer focused and helpful approach.
● A valid UK driving license free of major endorsements, and the use of a motor vehicle
