Summary

Role: Stores Technician

Grade and Salary: Grade 5 (£26,707,£31,236 per annum).

FTE and working pattern: 1FTE (35 hours per week) open-ended. A requirement of this role is that the successful candidate is expected to be flexible with working hours. Normal working hours are 8:30am–4:30pm, Monday to Friday. However, occasional weekend work may be required for Open Days, student events and other events.

Purpose of Role:
The Stores Technician supports the day-to-day operation of the William Perkin Stores within the School of Engineering & Physical Sciences. The role involves purchasing, receiving, storing, dispensing, and disposing of materials and equipment used for teaching and research across multiple scientific and engineering disciplines. Responsibilities include stock control, supplier coordination, invoicing, customs administration, and waste management, including chemicals, solvents, gases, and laboratory equipment. The role requires manual handling, physical work indoors and outdoors, and compliance with health and safety regulations.

Key Duties & Responsibilities:
• Support the Stores Supervisor in monitoring finances, KPIs, stock levels, and monthly reporting.
• Process purchasing, receipting, and reconciliation of goods and services using University procurement systems and purchasing cards.
• Maintain stock control systems, inventory records, and electronic tracking systems.
• Receive, check, store, and distribute deliveries, resolving supplier queries and coordinating returns.
• Manage customs clearance, import/export procedures, duties, and taxes.
• Dispense and manage chemicals, solvents, gas cylinders, liquid nitrogen, laboratory equipment, and other stock items.
• Coordinate disposal of chemicals, solvents, clinical waste, and other regulated materials.
• Ensure compliance with health and safety legislation, including COSHH and risk assessments.
• Arrange transport and shipping of goods, including dangerous goods, and maintain required records.
• Identify process improvements to increase efficiency, reduce waste, and improve customer service.
• Work independently, manage workloads effectively, communicate professionally, and support wider School activities as required.
• Ensure compliance with University procurement, financial, and safety policies.

Essential & Desirable Criteria:
Essential:
• HNC or equivalent in Chemistry/biology/life sciences, Mechanical/Chemical Engineering or extensive experience in a similar role.
• Experience of electronic purchase order systems including payments of duties and taxes for import/export.
• Experience of working within a similar environment as outlined above.
• Competent in the use of relevant IT packages (Word, Excel, Outlook etc)
• Experience of staff training
• Experience of health & safety legislation in a technical environment including risk assessment and COSHH.
Desirable:
• Experience of working in Higher Education
• A procurement or similar qualification
• Experience of shipping (dangerous) goods and Import/export regulations

About the Team:
The School of Engineering & Physical Sciences requires a Stores Technician to help maintain the day-to-day running of a busy, multi discipline Store facility providing for all School purchasing needs, and the day-to-day management of School waste disposal streams. The School Store supports the teaching disciplines of Chemistry, Physics, Mechanical, Chemical and Electronic Engineering, and Brewing & Distilling and 5 associated Research Institutes.
