Summary

Main purpose of the role:
The Waking Night Residential Support Worker is responsible for maintaining a safe, secure, and nurturing environment throughout the night for children and young people living within the residential home.

The post holder provides active overnight supervision, safeguarding monitoring, emotional reassurance, and practical support, ensuring children feel safe and supported outside daytime hours.
The role requires vigilance, professionalism, emotional resilience, and the ability to respond calmly and effectively to incidents occurring during the night.

Key Responsibilities

Night Care & Supervision
Remain awake and alert throughout the shift.
Conduct regular welfare checks in accordance with care plans and risk assessments.
Support children who wake during the night requiring reassurance or assistance.
Maintain a calm, safe, and settled night-time environment.
Support bedtime and morning routines where required.

Safeguarding and safety
•Monitor children identified as vulnerable overnight.
•Respond immediately to safeguarding concerns or incidents.
•Manage missing-from-home incidents in line with procedures.
•Maintain building security and monitor access to the home.
•Undertake fire safety checks and emergency procedures.
•Respond appropriately to medical or emotional crises.
Professional Practice
•Follow care plans, behaviour strategies, and risk assessments.
•Maintain professional boundaries.
•Demonstrate calm decision-making when lone working.
•Uphold safeguarding standards at all times.
Recording & Accountability
•Complete detailed night reports and incident recordings.
•Maintain accurate monitoring logs.
•Provide clear written and verbal handover to day staff.
•Escalate concerns promptly to on-call management.
Team Working
•Work collaboratively with colleagues to ensure consistent care practices.
•Communicate effectively and share relevant information.
•Take direction from Team leaders, managers while using initiative appropriately.
•Participate in Supervision, training and team meetings
Partnership Working
•Engage respectfully with families, social workers, education staff, and other professionals.
•Support children to maintain important relationships where appropriate.
Development
•Undertake mandatory training and actively engage in ongoing professional development.
•Work towards the Level 3 Diploma in Residential Childcare within required timescales if not already achieved.
Other Duties
•Carry out all responsibilities in accordance with organisational policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements.
•Promote equality, diversity, and inclusion in practice.
•Fulfil health and safety responsibilities to maintain a safe environment.
•Undertake additional duties reasonably required to support the safe and effective running of the home.
