We are currently recruiting for an experienced Business Support Officer for our client based in Southwark and surrounding areas.
Job Role:
The Technical Business Support Officer plays a key role within the Planning Division, supporting the delivery of planning and building control services. The role focuses on providing high-quality technical and administrative support across planning applications, enforcement, land charges, and customer enquiries.
The post holder acts as a central point of coordination between officers, managers, councillors, and the public, ensuring accurate information, efficient processes, and excellent customer service. The role also contributes to performance monitoring, income collection, and continuous service improvement.
Key Responsibilities of Business Support Officer:
•Register and provide technical support for planning applications, pre-applications, appeals, enforcement notices, and statutory consultations.
•Maintain and update planning registers and land charges datasets, ensuring accuracy and compliance.
•Provide technical advice and information to customers via phone and written correspondence.
•Manage the day-to-day collection of fees within the Planning Division.
•Ensure accurate reconciliation, recording, and banking of all payments.
•Support income generation processes including Planning Performance Agreements (PPA) and viability recharges using systems such as Uniform/SAP.
•Coordinate administrative arrangements for planning committees, sub-committees, and design review panels.
•Ensure consistent adherence to deadlines and service standards.
Working Hours of Business Support Officer: 36 Hours per week, 2.5 days in the Office (or 3 days one week 2 days the next alternating)
Requirements of Business Support Officer:
•Understanding of local government operations and political context.
•Knowledge of planning and building control processes (desirable/essential depending on role level).
•Minimum 2 years’ experience in a business support role within a planning or local government environment.
•Experience managing complex administrative processes with strict deadlines.
•Experience handling financial transactions, including fee collection and reconciliation.
•Experience working in a customer-focused environment
