We’re looking for experienced, enthusiastic geomorphologists who want their expertise to directly influence how rivers are restored, managed, and protected. This is a chance to apply your technical knowledge to real-world challenges, helping us to work with nature, not against it.
As the geomorphology lead in East Midlands Area, you’ll become a go to specialist:
shaping river restoration and Natural Flood Management schemes
influencing Environmental Land Management projects
supporting the Flood and Coastal Risk Management capital programme
advising on permits, planning proposals, and operational activities
leading or contributing to site visits, surveys, and assessments
You’ll work alongside ecologists, fisheries specialists, planners, engineers, and community groups; translating geomorphological science into practical, confident decisions. The work is fast paced, varied, and deeply rewarding.
This role is about technical leadership as much as technical expertise. You’ll handle complex cases, help set strategic direction, mentor colleagues, and strengthen geomorphological capability across teams.

The team
You’ll join a friendly, inclusive team of geomorphology and biodiversity specialists, based in Nottingham, who collaborate to protect and enhance river habitats.
We work strategically with other Environment Agency teams and external partners to mitigate environmental impacts and deliver meaningful improvements.
Experience/skills required
You should hold a degree (or equivalent) in a relevant discipline, with a strong understanding of geomorphic processes and practical experience applying fluvial geomorphology. We are looking for proven experience advising on complex or largescale projects, ideally including river restoration, flood risk management, or nature-based solutions.
Please evidence your knowledge of environmental permitting, planning processes, and Water Environment Regulations, and how these apply to hydromorphology. You should demonstrate your ability to communicate clearly with technical and nontechnical audiences, work independently and as part of multidisciplinary teams, and solve problems effectively. We also value self-motivation, strong organisational skills, and the ability to mentor or support others. A full driving licence, or willingness to obtain one, is required for site work.
