Summary
The Role
We are seeking an experienced and motivated engineer or scientist to support the development of low Technology Readiness Level (TRL) research concepts. This role involves designing, building, testing and analysing prototype systems so they can be evaluated for future capability.
You will work in laboratory and real-world environments, including time spent out in the field and at sea, conducting scientific trials and system testing. The role sits within a multidisciplinary applied technologies team and offers the opportunity to bridge the gap between theoretical research and practical implementation.
Training and development will be provided to support the specific requirements of the role.
Key Responsibilities
Design, build, test and develop low TRL prototype systems and concepts
Plan and lead laboratory and field trials, acting as Trials Officer where required
Design scientific test plans and test serials to meet technical requirements
Select, configure and operate measurement and instrumentation equipment
Design bespoke test setups and systems
Write trials documentation including test plans, method statements and EHS risk assessments
Lead and participate in system integration, verification and validation activities
Hands-on troubleshooting and repair of complex mechanical and electrical systems
Develop bespoke test software (e.g. MATLAB, Python, LabVIEW) for modelling, data processing and analysis
Analyse and interpret data to identify meaningful trends and conclusions
Manage logistics, facilities, subcontractors and test locations
Engage with customers, stakeholders, engineers and research scientists
Contribute to bid and proposal activity, including technical solutions and effort estimates
Deliver work to agreed time, cost and quality targets
Required Qualifications & Skills
Degree in Engineering, Mathematics, Physics or a related science discipline
Excellent verbal communication skills, including delivering complex concepts through presentations
Strong written skills, including technical report writing
Proven problem-solving ability with experience troubleshooting complex systems
Ability to manage, manipulate and analyse data effectively
Strong understanding of mechanical, electrical and electronic systems and their integration
Ability to work independently and manage personal workload effectively
Good working knowledge of the systems engineering lifecycle
Knowledge & Experience (Desirable / Developable)
4+ years’ relevant experience
Experience leading or participating in tests and trials, including EHS responsibilities
Hands-on experience with integration, verification and validation of prototype hardware
Experience designing and executing system tests and trials
Programming experience (e.g. MATLAB, Python, LabVIEW)
Experience in defence, maritime or naval engineering environments
Knowledge of naval or marine systems and environmental interactions
Experience participating in at-sea trials
