The Gynaecology ward provides inpatient care across a range of complex surgical specialties including gynaecology, plastics and reconstructive surgery, ENT, vascular and thoracic surgery, managing patients with varying levels of acuity and complexity and requiring strong clinical leadership, effective coordination and consistently high standards of personalised care. The ward operates within a fast-paced multidisciplinary environment where governance, quality improvement and patient experience are central to daily practice, and gynaecology experience is essential to support safe decision making and effective patient flow. The role We are seeking an experienced and confident Band 6 Junior Sister Charge Nurse to support the effective leadership and day to day management of the ward. Working closely with the Ward Manager, you will play a key role in ensuring the delivery of safe, high quality care, supporting staff development and maintaining operational efficiency. You will deputise for the Ward Manager as required, lead shifts, manage patient flow and act as a visible clinical leader within the team. Key responsibilities Provide strong clinical and professional leadership across the ward Manage a clinical caseload and oversee individualised patient care Support, supervise and develop nursing staff and HCAs Contribute to recruitment, induction, appraisals and mandatory training compliance Coordinate admissions, discharges and bed management in liaison with the MDT Ensure safe medicines management and high-quality documentation Lead on patient safety checks, audits and quality improvement activity Manage incidents, complaints and conflict in a timely and professional manner Use electronic rostering to ensure safe and effective staffing Represent the ward at meetings and governance forums when required Ideal candidate This role is suited to an experienced surgical nurse who is ready to take on a senior leadership position within a complex inpatient environment. Key Requirements: Current NMC registration as a Registered Nurse Significant post registration experience within acute inpatient care Proven experience working on a surgical ward Previous experience in a Band 6 or acting Band 6 role Essential experience in gynaecology nursing Experience supervising staff and leading shifts Strong clinical judgement and decision-making skills Confidence working across multiple surgical specialties Excellent communication and leadership skills A proactive approach to patient safety and service improvement Benefits We offer a range of benefits including flexible working and great career opportunities.
