Summary
Waste Collection Vehicle Driver
Job PurposeThe postholder will drive waste collection vehicles safely and efficiently, ensuring compliance with operational procedures. The role also involves supervising operatives, maintaining vehicle standards, and providing advice and assistance to members of the public regarding waste collection services.
Main Duties and ResponsibilitiesVehicle Operation & Maintenance
- Drive and manoeuvre waste collection vehicles to designated collection points.
- Transport and offload waste at landfill sites, composting facilities, or recycling centres in line with operational procedures.
- Conduct daily vehicle safety and security checks using the relevant checklist; report defects or damage to the Mechanics/Operations Supervisor.
- Wash the vehicle externally weekly and clean the interior between bin collections to prevent contamination of composting loads.
Team Supervision & Leadership
- Supervise assigned operatives, ensuring duties are carried out fully and in accordance with established procedures.
- Address matters reported by operatives where appropriate, escalating unresolved issues to the Supervisor.
- Work collaboratively with the team to complete daily schedules.
Public Interaction & Customer Service
- Provide advice to householders on brown bin and kerbside recycling services.
- Assist in resolving complaints or service requests from the public; escalate unresolved issues to the Supervisor.
- Ensure delivery of waste educational and promotional materials to households as required.
Compliance & Reporting
- Report all accidents promptly to the Supervisor.
- Implement procedures to minimise environmental impact, including immediate pollution control responses, under the ISO 14001 Environmental Management System.
- Contribute to continuous improvement by reporting observations relevant to service efficiency, e.g. illegal waste deposits, significant littering, or defective bins.
Professional Standards & Safety
- Maintain a positive image of the Council through high standards of personal appearance and conduct.
- Observe all Council health and safety rules, safeguarding personal wellbeing, colleagues, and the public.
Other Duties
- Undertake any other relevant duties commensurate with the nature and grade of the post.
Key Skills & Attributes
- A valid driving licence appropriate for waste collection vehicles.
- Experience in vehicle operation and waste management services.
- Supervisory skills with the ability to lead and support operatives.
- Strong awareness of health, safety, and environmental regulations.
- Good communication and problem-solving skills.
- Commitment to high standards of professionalism and customer service.
Qualifications
One year's relevant experience in each of the following areas:
- Driving Category C vehicles;
- Operating mechanical lifting equipment/hoist;
- Dealing with the public in a customer service capacity;
- Completing accurate records of scheduled and completed work.
- Valid DVTA Driver Qualification Card;
- Valid Digital Tachograph Card.
- Full current driving licence (valid in the UK) including entitlement to drive Category C vehicles (over 3500kg).
