Summary

Waste Collection Operative


Job PurposeThe post holder will work as part of a team to deliver an effective and efficient waste collection service, ensuring maximum customer satisfaction and maintaining the Council's reputation for high-quality public services.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • Professional Conduct
  • Maintain a positive image of the Council as a front-line service provider.
  • Ensure personal appearance and behaviour are of a consistently high standard.
  • Waste Collection
  • Remove wheeled refuse containers from collection points, empty them, and return them safely without obstructing public or household access.
  • Exercise discretion in accepting or rejecting bins based on compliance with Council waste management schemes.
  • Operate mechanical lifting equipment at the rear of collection vehicles.
  • Collect additional waste (bags, boxes) on designated 'double lift' days.
  • Cleanliness and Safety
  • Clear accidental spillages during bin emptying.
  • Clean up light littering around litter bins and report significant or widespread littering to the team leader.
  • Assist with lifting wheelie bins in approved cases, following Council policy.
  • Support the team leader in manoeuvring or reversing vehicles when required.
  • Observe all health and safety rules, safeguarding personal wellbeing, the crew, and the public.
  • Teamwork and Service Delivery
  • Work collaboratively to complete daily schedules.
  • Remain vigilant, reporting issues such as illegal waste deposits, defective bins, or significant littering to the team leader.
  • Retain knowledge of brown bin and kerbside recycling services, advising householders when necessary.
  • Report contamination or misuse of waste schemes to the team leader.
  • Customer Interaction
  • Respond to public complaints or service requests directly or escalate to the team leader as appropriate.
  • Deliver waste education and promotional materials to households (up to three times per year).
  • Continuous Improvement
  • Contribute to service improvement by reporting observations or suggestions to the team leader.
  • Implement procedures to minimise environmental impact, including immediate pollution control responses, under the ISO 14001 Environmental Management System.
  • Vehicle and Equipment Care
  • Assist with vehicle washing and maintenance.
  • Clean vehicle interiors between grey and brown bin collections to prevent contamination of organic waste destined for composting facilities.
  • Flexibility and Other Duties
  • Redeploy to other duties, including labouring tasks, as required.
  • Undertake any other relevant duties commensurate with the nature and grade of the post.
