Summary
Main Clinical Activities Specimen dissection accounting for 50% of the job role. Work alongside consultant colleagues to provide a diagnostic and interpretative Cellular Pathology Service. This will include reporting and dissecting a range of specimens under the supervision of consultant colleagues as appropriate. Take part, with other consultant colleagues, in regular multidisciplinary team meetings. Provide appropriate annual leave and other authorised absence cover for your colleagues Provide assistance and supervision to laboratory staff in relation to all aspects of specimen processing. Educational and other activities This includes participation in the preparation and writing policies and SOPs; collecting and analysing audit and surveillance data; responses to various documents; writing educational PowerPoint presentations. Involvement in quality assurance performance within the department, including taking part in all relevant national external quality assurance (NEQAS) programmes. Involvement in achieving and maintaining full accreditation to UKAS ISO 15189 standards. Teaching and training a wide range of health care workers and junior medical staff Managerial Arrangements The appointee will work closely with other service providers such as the Biomedical Scientists and administration staff in the day-to-day provision of an efficient and effective Cellular Pathology service at UHDB NHS Foundation Trust. The employee will assist with the responsibility for use and security of the Trusts assets, including their own use, and ensuring correct use by others. You will also be expected to support business planning including introduction of new methods, assist with Policy and SOP preparation. There are a number of regular departmental meetings that oversee the various aspects of laboratory where attendance may be required. The appointee will take an active role in matters of Clinical Governance including audit and training that relate to the laboratory and clinical activities of the Cellular Pathology Department. Service Development Activities Participate with developmental activities to improve the service alongside Cellular Pathology Consultants as appropriate. Assisting management in business planning, including the assessment and introduction of new methods and forward planning. Attendance at local and regional cancer network meetings as appropriate The Trust provides an induction course for all new employees (including SAS doctors), attendance at which is mandatory. Revalidation As part of the process of revalidation the post holder will be expected to comply with the annual appraisal processes which are established in the Trust. This will include a requirement to collect feedback information, to quality assurance/improvement and maintain CPD in line with GMC Good Medical Practice. Research Research is not a requirement of the post but there are facilities to undertake research and the hospital has several active research groups operating in different areas. The Trust comprises research-active Teaching Hospitals with a developing culture of research and innovation across the whole organisation. All clinicians are expected to engage in research, development & innovation according to their subspecialty interests. Engagement of clinical staff in research covers a spectrum of involvement, ranging from awareness of the studies and trials taking place in their areas, to assisting with the identification of research participants, to those who win research funding and assume the role of Chief Investigator for multi- centre trials and studies. Staff who wish to undertake research require the approval of the Trust R&I Department and relevant ethical approval, and must adhere to the National Framework for Research Governance. Clinical Governance All members of staff have a responsibility to abide by all clinical governance policies, practices and codes provided by the Trust and have an equal responsibility with management for developing and maintaining appropriate systems and practice for maintaining safe working practices. The post holder is expected to demonstrate a firm commitment to the principles of clinical governance, including: Co-operating and liaising with clinical governance committees and leads as appropriate and developing a programme of personal continuing professional education and development, within available resources and within the workload and priorities of the service. Attending and contributing to the Trusts Clinical Governance Programme, including the Trusts Clinical Incident Reporting systems, Adverse Incident Policy and other umbrella policies. Encouraging and promoting an open climate within the Trust to enable training grade staff to participate fully in Trust wide programmes. Copies of Trust wide clinical governance policies are available on the Trust intranet site. The postholder will participate in clinical governance activities, including clinical audit, clinical effectiveness, risk management and quality improvement activities as required by the Trust and external accrediting bodies.
