Summary
We are looking for a speciality doctor to join our current team of medical and biomedical scientist staff with a primary aim to aid in specimen dissection. Dissection will include a wide range of specimens but will be predominantly focused on an immediate need to assist in breast dissection.
The Cellular Pathology Department is based on the site of Royal Derby Hospital. This is a very busy UKAS accredited department with an interesting, varied and growing workload, covering most specialities except medical renal biopsies, neuropathology and paediatric/neonatal pathology.
We are looking foraspeciality doctor to join our current team of medical and biomedical scientist staff with a primary aim to aid in specimen dissection. Dissection will include a wide range of specimens but will bepredominantly focusedon an immediate need toassistin breast dissection.
Discussions surroundingshort and long termeducational needs will be welcomed alongside the departmental service needs. A mentor will be providedfor supportand there will be opportunity to support consultants in reporting histopathology specimens as well asparticipatingand attending multidisciplinary team meetings.
The current cellular pathology service aspires to provide an integrated service contributing to all aspects of diagnosis,screeningand monitoring of disease. MainClinicalActivities
• Specimen dissection accounting for 50% of thejobrole.
• Work alongsideconsultant colleaguesto provide adiagnostic and interpretative Cellular Pathology Service. This will include reportingand dissectinga range of specimens under the supervision of consultant colleagues asappropriate.
• Takepart,withotherconsultantcolleagues,inregularmultidisciplinaryteammeetings.
• Provideappropriateannualleaveandotherauthorisedabsencecoverforyourcolleagues
• Provideassistanceand supervision to laboratory staff in relation to all aspects of specimen processing.
Educationalandotheractivities
• This includes participation in the preparation and writing policies and SOPs; collecting andanalysingauditandsurveillancedata;responsestovariousdocuments;writingeducational PowerPointpresentations.
• Involvementinqualityassuranceperformancewithinthedepartment,includingtakingpartinallrelevantnationalexternalqualityassurance(NEQAS)programmes.
• InvolvementinachievingandmaintainingfullaccreditationtoUKASISO 15189standards.
• Teachingandtrainingawiderangeofhealthcareworkersandjuniormedicalstaff
ManagerialArrangements
The appointee will work closely with other service providers such as the Biomedical Scientists and administration staff in the day-to-day provision of an efficient and effective Cellular Pathology service at UHDB NHS Foundation Trust.
The employee willassistwith the responsibility foruseand security of the Trust’s assets, including their own use, and ensuring correct use by others.
Youwillalsobeexpectedtosupportbusinessplanningincludingintroductionofnewmethods,assistwith Policy and SOP preparation.
There area number ofregular departmental meetings that oversee the various aspects oflaboratorywhere attendance may berequired.The appointee will take an active role in matters of Clinical Governance including audit and training that relate to the laboratory and clinical activities of the Cellular Pathology Department.

The Trust provides an induction course for all new employees (including SAS doctors), attendance at which is mandatory.
Revalidation
As part of the process of revalidation thepost holderwill be expected tocomply withthe annual appraisal processes which areestablishedin the Trust.
Thiswillinclude arequirementtocollect feedback information,to quality assurance/improvement and maintain CPD in line with GMC Good Medical Practice.
Research
Research is not a requirement of the post but there are facilities to undertakeresearchand the hospital has several active research groupsoperatingin different areas.
The Trustcomprisesresearch-active Teaching Hospitals with a developing culture of research and innovation across the wholeorganisation. All clinicians are expected to engage in research, development & innovation according to their subspecialty interests.
Engagement of clinical staff in research covers a spectrum of involvement, ranging from awareness of the studies and trials taking place in their areas, toassistingwith the identification of research participants, to those who win research funding and assume the role of Chief Investigator for multi-centretrials and studies.
Staff who wish to undertake research require the approval of the Trust R&I Department andrelevant ethicalapproval, andmust adhere to the National Framework for Research Governance.
ClinicalGovernance
All members of staff havea responsibility to abide by all clinical governance policies, practices and codesprovidedbytheTrustandhaveanequalresponsibilitywithmanagementfordevelopingandmaintainingappropriate systemsand practice formaintainingsafe working practices.The post holder is expected todemonstratea firm commitment to the principles of clinical governance,including:
• Co-operating and liaising with clinical governance committees and leads asappropriateand developing aprogrammeof personal continuing professional education and development, within available resources and within the workload and priorities of the service.
• Attending and contributing to the Trust’s Clinical GovernanceProgramme, including the Trust’s Clinical Incident Reporting systems, Adverse IncidentPolicyand other umbrella policies.
• Encouraging and promoting an open climate within the Trust to enable training grade staff toparticipatefully in Trust wideprogrammes.
