Summary




The trust is seeking a Full time (10PA) Speciality Doctor to work within the Older Peoples Care Unit at Hazelwood House.

Nottinghamshire Healthcare is a major provider of specialist mental health services for older people in Nottingham City and the wider county. The service caters to the needs of all people suffering from dementia, regardless of age; and those, aged over 65 years, presenting with severe and enduring mental health illnesses, such as depression.



The Trust has 90 assessment and treatment beds. There are 38 beds at Highbury hospital (20 organic and 18 functional beds). Blossomwood Mental health unit currently has 35 beds (15 organic and 20 functional beds) and a further 10 beds on Dove ward.


This is a 10 PA post based in City and South County (Broxtowe) IHTT. The doctor will provide clinical and medical leadership to the MDT and will lead the assessment and treatment of patients under their care for the IHTT catchment area,under the supervision of the Consultant Psychiatrist, Dr Katie Ward.



The IHTT receives referrals from General practitioners, Rapid Response Liaison Psychiatry (RRLP), Community Mental Health Teams (CMHT), social services, individual patients and inpatient services. The IHTT (City and South County) currently receives approximately 64 referrals/month of which approximately 20% are assessed by medical staff during the treatment episode. The remainder of patients are discussed during MDTs where treatment plans are formulated. All patients are assessed by an IHTT clinician within 24-48 hours of receiving the referral.

The doctor will work in the City and Broxtowe IHTTs. They will have excellent opportunities to gain experience in managing a range of mental health problems, including behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia, depression, anxiety disorders, bipolar disorder, late onset psychosis and personality disorders, in a community setting. The doctor will have the opportunity to assess patients in a crisis situation and assess patients under the Mental Health Act.



The IHTT works alongside the Community Mental Health Team (CMHT), dementia outreach service (DOS) and memory assessment service (MAS). The doctor will be expected to become a key player in the multidisciplinary team. The doctor will be able to develop skills and experience in chairing the weekly MDTs and formulating management plans for the patients on the case load. The doctor will work closely with the community psychiatric nurses (CPN), pharmacy, occupational therapy and physiotherapy colleagues as part of the MDT.

· Provision of a comprehensive old age psychiatry service and diagnosis and treatment of patients within the sector,

· The provision of medical/psychiatric assessments to inform care planning and risk assessment

· To liaise with other services, such as Primary Care, Social Services, RRLP, IHTT, DOS and Domiciliary and Voluntary sectors to facilitate patient care.
• To provide medical leadership for the multi-disciplinary team leadership for City and Broxtowe IHTTs
• The completion of administrative tasks related to clinical responsibilities
• To maintain good clinical records using Trust’s electronic record system
• To maintain a revalidation portfolio and participate in annual appraisal
• Undertake a job plan review with the Clinical Directors annually
• Maintain professional registration with the GMC and approval as a Section 12(2) approved doctor
• Compliance with Trusts agreed policies and procedures
• The post holder will be expected to have a familiarity with important relevant legislation affecting the care of older people with mental illness.
