Summary


We are delighted to be able to offer an opportunity for a highly motivated, ambitious individual to join our well integrated team.

The successful candidate would join a team of 4 consultants and 2 fellows who provide the corneal service to increase the clinical capacity and expertise. This post will be based at the Royal Victoria Infirmary, Newcastle upon Tyne, but may involve clinics and operating at outreach sites. All routine cataract surgery takes place at the Newcastle Westgate Cataract Centre which is a mile from the RVI.

In addition to the challenges of the role, we can offer you a commitment to teaching, education, research and audit.
Candidates for the post must be registered medical practitioners and on, or eligible to join, the Specialist Register within six months of the date of the Appointments Committee.

The successful candidate will be responsible for the provision of an effective and comprehensive corneal ophthalmology service as part of the corneal team. They will be expected to take part in the teaching of resident doctors, fellows as well as administrative roles within specialty. The successful candidate will work according to the terms and conditions of the national Consultant contract.

Clinical:
• To be able to provide management of corneal eye conditions in a busy service as part of the corneal ophthalmology team.
• To manage corneal surgical cases.
• To provide cataract surgery if required
• To work in other areas such as eye emergency if required.

Administrative:
• To participate in the departmental clinical audit meeting
• To manage clinics and theatre lists in close collaboration with secretaries and waiting list team
• To undertake managerial role as per consultant job.

Research:
• To show interest in research opportunities

Teaching:
• To participate in the departmental teaching for resident doctors and other allied health professionals.
• To participate in the regional teaching for resident doctors
• Previous experience in teaching is welcome.
