Summary

The Major Sporting Projects Delivery Directorate is a new directorate within DCMS’s Policy Group. It oversees the Government’s input to some of the highest profile programmes in the world of sport. Amongst the projects and programmes covered by the team are:
  • The UEFA European Championships 2028 - ensuring the Government delivers on its commitments to ensure that this major event is staged successfully, maximising economic growth and benefiting local communities. This programme is part of the Government Major Projects Portfolio.
  • The future pipeline of major sporting events - driving forward the Government's work, with partners, to secure, and successfully host, the world’s biggest and best sporting events, including the women’s Rugby World Cup 2025 and the bid for the FIFA Women’s World Cup in 2035.
  • Grassroots facilities delivery - overseeing the delivery of hundreds of millions into multi-sport grassroots facilities across the UK, as part of the EURO 2028 impact programme and to tackle inactivity, support the Health mission and build cohesive communities by providing access to high quality shared sporting spaces.

The directorate has evolved out of a unit within the existing Sport and Gambling Directorate, with which it will need to continue working seamlessly.

The team prioritises a positive workplace culture, where colleagues are committed to excellence in delivery, ongoing personal development, a supportive working environment, and operating seamlessly with colleagues and stakeholders based across the UK, and beyond.

This is a unique and exciting opportunity to join the Major Sporting Projects Delivery Directorate to work on the planning for UK and Ireland hosting the men’s UEFA European Championships in 2028 (EURO 2028). EURO 2028 will be the largest sporting event that the UK and Ireland have ever jointly hosted. These roles will lead the design and delivery of the UK Government’s contribution to the legacy and sustainability plans within the wider tournament legacy programme.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Lead planning and implementation of UK Government’s contributions to the legacy and sustainability plans for EURO 2028, ensuring robust and comprehensive plans are designed, delivered and evaluated;
  • Work with key partners and stakeholders to influence the design and delivery of the multi-partner legacy & sustainability programmes to ensure alignment with UK Government priorities and missions;
  • Provide visible and effective leadership on the EURO 2028 Impact and Legacy programme, including representing the UK Government on key governance forums.
  • Coordinate UKG input into the design and delivery of a comprehensive cross partner sustainability charter, ensuring key stakeholders across government are consulted throughout the development process.
  • Exact delineation of roles and responsibilities will continue to be refined as the team expands

If other opportunities arise in this or a similar area, it may be possible for candidates from this process to be appointed to them.
