Summary
Painter and decorator duties and responsibilities:-Painters are responsible for site preparation, colour matching, surface preparation and applying paint and other finishes to walls, ceilings, furniture and other surfaces. Additional duties and responsibilities include:
Working with clients to ensure they complete the work according to the requirements
Measuring the work area to calculate the time and materials required to complete the project
Preparing the surrounding area, including covering fixtures and furniture to prevent messes
Preparing painting surfaces, including removing old paint, filling holes and cracks and washing walls
Choosing the tools to complete the job
Mixing and matching paints and colours to meet the texture and look required for the project
Applying paint, varnishing and other finishes, hanging wallpapers and other decorative products
Cleaning up painting tools and supplies, replacing fixtures and rearranging furniture after completing the project
Collaborating with painters on other larger jobs
Working with other construction professionals such as, carpenters, electricians and plumbers when necessary
Training
To attend Exeter College's Falcon House, one day a week, during term time only.
Qualifications required
Driving licence and transport desired. Maths and English Grade 4 or above desired

Attention to Detail - Ability to spot imperfections and focus on high-quality finishes.
Basic Knowledge of the Construction Industry - Familiarity with how building sites operate, trade roles, and general site safety.
Good Hand-Eye Coordination - Helps with precision work like cutting in, masking, or wallpapering.
Manual Dexterity - Comfortable handling brushes, rollers, tools, and materials with control and care.
Basic Maths Skills - Useful for measuring surfaces, estimating paint quantities, and understanding ratios when mixing.
Physical Fitness - Ability to stand, climb, lift, and carry materials over extended period
Interest in Design or Aesthetics - An appreciation for colours, finishes, and visual detail is valuable in decorative work.
Basic Tool Awareness - Knowing common tools like paintbrushes, rollers, scrapers, and sandpaper—even at a basic level.
Awareness of Health & Safety - Understanding basic safety principles and the importance of PPE on site.
Driving Licence - Being able to drive can make it easier to carry necessary tools and get to various job sites on time, especially where public transport is limited.
