Job Purpose
The Apprentice Fabricator is responsible for carrying out day-today duties
to support the Production Team Leader and other members of the sheet
metal fabrication team. They are expected to contribute to overall team
output and will be trained to work on various pieces of workshop
equipment & undertake processes, including (but not limited to), CNC
Punching; Linishing; CNC Folding; Inserting; Drilling; Countersinking; MIG
& TIG Welding; Stud & Spot Welding; Degreasing; Powder Coat Painting;
Stainless Steel finishing, Mechanical Assembly.
Through day release, they will be expected to complete all assigned
college studies and projects and achieve an appropriate level pass at the
conclusion of their course.
Job Role and Responsibilities
Health & Safety
Take responsibility for their own personal safety whilst at work
Contribute to the safety of others through observing all rules and
best practise whilst working
To only use processes when trained and signed off to use
Manufacturing
Once trained, be able to operate the following processes and
achieve consistent qualitative results with good efficiency:
CNC Punching – set up, operate, maintain punching equipment
& process
Linishing – complete all linishing using correct equipment and
location
CNC Folding – operate folding equipment
Insertion – select correct fastenings and tooling and operate
process
Drilling – perform drilling & countersinking to correct size &
depth
MIG & TIG Welding – on steel, stainless-steel and aluminium
materials
Spot & Stud Welding – on steel and stainless-steel materials
Degreasing – load. Unload and operate process within guidelines
Powder Coat Painting – prepare and apply powder, load and
unload oven
Stainless Steel Finishing – operate cleaning equipment to
required standard
Mechanical Assembly – follow instructions and fit parts as
required
Workshop Organisation and maintenance tasks
Support keeping the workshop organised and deliver any
specific responsibilities such as cleaning, waste disposal, stock
organisation
Support team on specific items of routine monthly maintenance
Other
Take an interest in sheet metal fabrication and increase general
knowledge through trade magazines, web browsing, following
relevant podcasts, etc
Attain relevant NVQ based apprentice qualification
Identify areas where waste, in all its forms, can be reduced and
suggest changes that could lead to an increase in efficiency &
effectiveness
Remuneration & Hours
Pay Band 1
Overtime is usually payable when required
A discretionary bonus may be payable based on performance
Mon-Thu working hours (may require college attendance on a
Friday)
Training
Mix of on the job learning and day release to the college
Qualifications required
Maths & English level 4 and above.
Skills required
Essential:
Demonstrate a willingness to learn and
retain acquired knowledge
Desirable:
Computer literate
Competency with CAD/CAM
software.
Experience of CNC equipment
operation.
Prospects
After completion of Level 2 Engineering Operative, talks can be held to progress onto Level 3.
Qualification / Standard : ST0537 Engineering operative
Duration 15 months
