The Opportunity
The Principal Engineer provides leadership in delivering engineering and technical activities through the application of sound processes, domain knowledge, and extensive experience. At this level, the role involves managing complex engineering tasks, resolving a range of technical challenges, and producing high-quality deliverables. You will work either independently or as part of a small team, often acting as a subject matter expert in a specialist area.
This role involves the production and review of technical reports, calculations, specifications, and other documentation. You will support and mentor junior engineers and foster a culture of collaboration, high performance, and continuous improvement.

Your duties and responsibilities will be

- Lead multidisciplinary teams to deliver engineering work in line with agreed scope, schedule, and quality standards.
- Supervise and mentor engineers and technical specialists.
- Promote collaboration between engineering and other functional teams.
- Manage customer relationships and ensure clear, timely communication of technical progress and challenges.
- Ensure all engineering outputs meet defined technical standards and specifications.
- Produce, review, and approve engineering deliverables including analyses, reports, method statements, and technical documents.
- Ensure all outputs undergo appropriate levels of review, verification, and approval.
- Apply relevant procedures, codes, and standards to all technical activities.
- Maintain the highest standards of health, safety, and environmental compliance.
- Manage resourcing and skills development to meet project requirements.
- Plan and execute project and technical audits to support learning and continuous improvement.
- Stay current with industry best practices and drive engineering excellence within the team.
- Contribute to learning from experience (LfE) activities during and after project execution.
- Support business development through technical input into bids and tenders.
- Actively participate in shaping a culture that reflects organisational values around safety, inclusion, and ethical behaviour.
- Take ownership of team performance and development, providing ongoing feedback and support.
- Plan and manage engineering resources effectively to meet client expectations and project commitments.

You will have the following qualifications & experience

- Degree (or equivalent) in a relevant engineering discipline.
- Chartered Engineer status.
- Demonstrable experience managing engineering teams and delivering analysis work across various project types and complexities.
- Proven ability to produce, review, and approve a wide range of technical documentation.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to collaborate across disciplines.

It's great if you also have the following

- Membership of a relevant professional institute or ability to register with the Engineering Council
- Experience delivering engineering scope from concept design to EPC (Engineering, Procurement, Construction).
- Broad experience across commercial or defence engineering projects.
