An exciting opportunity has arisen for a dynamic, engaging and committed Teaching Fellow to work in specific roles in Medical Education within the Trust to support undergraduate education for Newcastle University Medical School students.

This post would suit trainees who have a special interest in Clinical Education and the post holders will have the opportunity to study for the Postgraduate Certificate in Clinical Education. Applicants will have completed Foundation Training and / or Core Training. The post will provide a solid basis from which to apply for either a CT post or an ST posts

The post is available from Wednesday 06.08.25 – Tuesday 04.08.26 and you must have full GMC registration with a license to practice at time of application. You must have previous paid NHS experience. We typically receive several hundred applications for ST1/2 locally employed doctor posts and we will therefore only shortlist candidates with paid NHS experience (this does not include Clinical Access or Clinical Observership placements) which is an essential criteria within the Person Specification. Please do not apply if you do not have paid NHS experience as this leads to significant clinician time reviewing applications from applicants who will not be shortlisted.

Please read attached Job Description and Person Specification.

The individual will be expected to perform duties and take clinical responsibility to ST1-2 level. The duties of the post holder include supporting the delivery of high-quality medical education including the development, delivery and evaluation of courses. Clinical duties of the post holder will be post-specific.

This Teaching Fellow post in ENT is split between clinical time (70%) spent within the ENT department and allocated teaching time (30%).

The clinical opportunities include ward-based experience, time to attend clinics, including a rapid access ENT emergency clinic and sub-specialty clinics such as neck lump clinics, head and neck MDT clinics, paediatric ENT clinics, otology and rhinology clinics. Attendance at theatre lists is encouraged, as well as the chance to be involved in or lead departmental teaching, audits and quality improvement projects.

As a flexible working friendly organisation, we want to be sure that you can work in a way that is best for us and for our patients, and for you. Speak to us about how we might be able to accommodate a flexible working arrangement. If it works for the service, we will do our best to make it work for you.

Most medical specialties are represented by teaching fellows. For further information please contact Lewis Armstrong on 0191 21 25210 or via email lewis.armstrong@nhs.net

Newcastle Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is one of the busiest, largest and most successful teaching NHS foundation trusts in the country, with around 16,000 staff and an annual income of £1 billion. We have a long history of providing high quality care, clinical excellence, and innovation in medical research regionally, nationally and internationally.

We’re also proud to be the second largest provider of specialised services in the country. This means we support people with a range of rare and complex medical, surgical and neurological conditions, cancers and genetic orders.

Our staff oversee around 1.84 million patients ‘contacts’ each year, delivering high standards of healthcare.

We are committed to promoting equality and diversity and recognise the benefit in providing an inclusive environment. We value and respect the diversity of our employees and aim to recruit a workforce which reflects the communities we serve, and is equipped to deliver the best service to our patients. We welcome all applications irrespective of people’s race, disability, gender, sexual orientation, religion or belief, age, gender identity, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity and in particular those from under- represented groups.

Teaching:

The successful applicant will be responsible for delivering clinical teaching sessions to Newcastle University medical students attached to Newcastle Hospitals. The Trust has a role in the delivery of teaching to all 5 years of the undergraduate MBBS programme but most of the teaching will be delivered to students in years 3, 4 and 5. As well as delivering fixed commitments within the programme it is hoped Teaching Fellows will develop their own innovative ideas for clinical teaching during their time with us.

The Trust Undergraduate Team consists of a group of enthusiastic Clinicians under the leadership of Deputy Director of Medical Education (UG) Dr Ian Baxter, supported by Teaching Fellow Lead Dr Andrew Stanton and an invaluable team of administrative staff. We will offer support and supervision over the year as well as training and mentorship so that you develop your own teaching skills and understanding of wider issues in medical education. As well as being offered in-house induction and training, the post holder will also be supported to undertake a Certificate of Clinical Education as part of this post.

Clinical:

Clinical duties for this ENT teaching fellow post include ward-based care of ENT and head and neck inpatients with daily ward rounds and participation in the ENT emergency clinic and covering paediatric ENT at the Great North Children’s hospital, on a rotational basis. The on call commitment is 100%, contributing to a shared out of hours rota between ENT and urology.

Personal Education:

All staff are encouraged to learn from the extensive clinical education activities that take place in the Trust, and there are a number of weekly meetings that provide excellent educational opportunities. Successful applicants will be encouraged to study for the postgraduate certificate in clinical education.
