The two posts are available from 6th August 2025 until 4th August 2026 and you must have full GMC registration with a license to practice. Ideally applicants will have completed Foundation Training and / or Core Training.
The post will provide a solid basis from which to apply for specialist training and many of our previous fellows have gone on to successfully secure posts in Internal Medicine or GP training.
The Older Peoples’ Medicine Department is made up of an enthusiastic and dynamic team, which crosses both the Royal Victoria Infirmary (RVI) and Freeman Hospital. We have one acute OPM ward at the RVI, and additionally, a new Front of House Frailty service which is currently being developed, with the aim of improving pathways and optimising the care of our frail older patients early in their admission to hospital. There are four acute OPM wards, two specialist rehabilitation wards (Stroke and Orthogeriatrics) and a complex discharge ward at the Freeman Hospital.
The fellows will spend their time within our supportive teams, providing cover expected of ST1-2 level, being involved in the care and management of complex frail older people.
These posts will involve working across the service and will provide the perfect opportunity to gain further experience in the management of frail older people alongside our specialist teams. Experience gained in this role will help improve skills in holistic care of older people which would be invaluable to all branches of medicine and surgery. Additionally, our department has dedicated weekly departmental teaching and radiology meetings and encourage attendance at other teaching and learning events including Trust Grand Rounds.
We typically receive several hundred applications for ST1/2 locally employed doctor posts and we will therefore only shortlist candidates withpaid NHS experience(this doesnotinclude Clinical Access or Clinical Observership placements) which is an essential criteria within the Person Specification. Please do not apply if you do not have paid NHS experience as this leads to significant clinician time reviewing applications from applicants who will not be shortlisted.
Our staff oversee over 6,500 patient contacts every day, delivering high standards of healthcare from the following sites:
• Freeman Hospital
• Royal Victoria Infirmary (RVI)
• Health Innovation Neighbourhood (on the former Newcastle General Hospital and Centre for Ageing and Vitality site)
• Newcastle Dental Hospital
• Newcastle Fertility Centre
• Northern Centre for Cancer Care, North Cumbria
• Northern Genetics Service
• Cramlington Manor Walks
These include a range of flagship services which deliver cutting-edge care (supported by state-of-the-art diagnostic services in both radiology and pathology) and are a catalyst for innovation to support pioneering clinical practice in the NHS.
We also have offices at Regent Point in Gosforth and community sites.
Please see attached information on what Staff Benefits we have to offer at our Trust under ‘Documents to download’ or ‘Supporting documents’.
