Summary

The Healthcare Assistant will work within the specialised nurse led PICC & Vascular Access Service to provide a high standard of care to patients who require or have a Vascular Access. The job holder will be expected to work autonomously with some aspects of patient care, referring to the seniors when necessary. The role includes assisting with staff training and line insertions, aftercare and troubleshooting of lines and undertaking bloods and swabs for patients as necessary. The HCA will also be expected to undertake administrative tasks including preparing referrals, overseeing stock, updating computer records, calling patients, transferring patient and answering general enquiries. The job is full time (37.5 hours pw), currently weekdays only, 7:45 am 15:45 pm. MAIN DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES Assist The vascular Access inserter during procedures either in Clinic room or at the bedside Maintain the dignity and respect of patients Support and reassure patients undergoing a clinical procedure Undertake equipment safety checks Demonstrate knowledge of infection control standards and promote these within the trust adhering to the IPC Policy at all the times Visit patients on different wards to undertake line management Assist with the transferring of patients using appropriate manual handling Undertake line dressing changes, checking for signs of possible complication Undertake line flushes, checking for signs of possible complication IV cannulation and phlebotomy, with training to use ultrasound for this Managing day case waiting list Confirming bookings and forwarding patient information Scanning patient documents Inputting patient information on to databases Accurately taking and relaying information Routine follow up calls to patients and taking patient queries Overseeing stock orders, undertake some orders, unpacking stores, stock and expiry date checks Provide some staff training on wards, and help to deliver regular training in Ed Centre with CNS 1. Communication Provide advice & support to patients/carers/relatives and colleagues both internally and externally. Good communication skills with the team and all of the multidisciplinary team involved with the PiCC & Vascular Access service patients 2. Analytical and Planning Receive referrals for inpatients and outpatients, plan, prioritise and manage own workload Analyse practice and evaluate outcomes through audit Be aware of the complaints and incident reporting procedure Be individually motivated, self-aware, able to work across professional and organisational boundaries 3. Clinical Duties Liaise with medical teams and nursing staff Assist Vascular Access inserter with insertion of Vascular access devices/bloods Take pre-procedure bloods where required Undertake US guided phlebotomy/cannulation (after training and completion of competencies) Undertake swabbing of patients (MRSA or Vascular access insertion site) Undertake dressings following completion of job specific competencies for outpatients and inpatients Troubleshoot issues with lines or arm within boundaries set in line with job specific competencies, escalating to the seniors Work in partnership with patients and carers to recognize individual care needs Promote compliance and safety
