Summary

The Heritage Sponsorship and Engagement team is a small, friendly team with responsibility for managing the Department's relationship with the 5 Heritage Public Bodies. This role is based in the wider Heritage Team and UK City of Culture team, part of the VEHLAC Directorate which include the Visitor Economy, Loans & Government Art Collection teams.

The Heritage Team oversees the protection, promotion and conservation of the historic environment of England for the benefit of current and future generations. This involves promoting the understanding of, and access to, England’s rich built heritage. This is done through internal policy development work, influencing within government and the wider heritage sector and through our statutory functions.

The team has a strong outward facing and influencing role, overseeing the good governance of our public bodies and ensuring effective management of public money. We also develop and deliver policy priorities with our public bodies and sector networks, as well as influencing other government departments to ensure heritage considerations, such as Net Zero, are embedded in policy development. The team also works closely with heritage public bodies to deliver the policies that protect and enhance the nation’s historic environment.

In November 2023 the Grenfell Tower Memorial Commission recommended the Government explore options for appropriate bodies that could be responsible for the ongoing management and maintenance of the memorial after its construction. This role will ensure that DCMS delivers on the cross-Government priority to ensure delivery of a fitting & lasting memorial. Working in close partnership with MHCLG, relevant Arms Length Bodies (ALBs) and colleagues across DCMS, the jobholder will lead DCMS’ contribution to the MHCLG Grenfell Memorial programme, by establishing the implications of the memorial’s design, build and long term future for both DCMS and the Public Bodies potentially in scope to play a permanent role.

This is an area of significant political interest and offers an exciting opportunity for candidates looking to work on a priority project, with significant exposure to senior officials, and supporting development of advice to ministers.

Main areas of responsibility will be to:

  • Support DCMS’ policy work on the MHCLG Grenfell Memorial programme, including establishing the implications of the memorial’s design, build and long term future for (i) DCMS and (ii) the Public Bodies potentially in scope to have a permanent ownership and/or maintenance role in the memorial
  • Project manage DCMS’ contribution to the xHMG programme board & Steering Group run by MHCLG, to promote delivery of projects within the wider programme
  • Support the Grade 7 in preparation of advice for senior officials and ministers
  • Work in close partnership with the ALBs, MHCLG (the lead department), functional teams within DCMS
  • Create & maintain project management tools that support policy delivery and promote input from cross-DCMS functional leads.
