Summary


In conjunction with NHS England, in 2018, we commenced the offer of maternal Flu and Pertussis vaccinations. A vaccination team of two Band 5 nurses/midwives with administrative support was created and the role of the team is to focus on the successful implementation of the national maternal vaccination programme. In 2024, the new maternal vaccine, Respiratory Syncytial virus (RSV) will commence. Our established nurse will lead you through these changes under the guidance of the Consultant Midwife for Public health and the Infectious Diseases lead midwife.

Ensuring that nursing procedures are carried out in accordance with St George’s Healthcare policy taking appropriate action in emergency situations.

Setting, monitoring and maintaining excellent standards of nursing care in conjunction with the multidisciplinary team.

Maintaining personal contact with patients, relatives and carers, being sensitive to their needs for courtesy, dignity and privacy and ensuring a friendly environment at all times.

Maintaining timely and accurate nursing records and data collection, and ensuring that confidentiality is respected.

Storing, checking and administering drugs including the intravenous route in accordance with Trust policy and NMC standards. Ensure that the cold chain protocol is adhered to.

To work with minimal supervision in all areas of the speciality as required.

Communicating with and assisting the multidisciplinary team to promote excellence in the delivery of patient care.

To prioritise own workload and that of other staff ensuring that the vaccination service is managed effectively, or suspended if appropriate according to service requirements.

To contribute to the local resolution, investigation and follow up action of any informal or formal complaints, and escalate appropriately.

To be aware of George’s University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust fire regulations, cardiac arrest and major incidents procedures. Undertake training as a fire warden and ensure that sufficient staff in your team is trained as fire wardens.

To be conversant with George’s University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust grievance and disciplinary procedures and any other policies as appropriate. Follow midwifery and obstetric guidelines and liaise where necessary with medical staff in the implementation of client care.
