Summary
We are seeking to recruitfour (4)trainee Education Mental Health Practitioners (EMHPs). The EMHP role is an exciting opportunity to deliver evidence-based early interventions, working across both educational settings and healthcare sectors. This training programme is part of a national transformation programme, a shared initiative between the Department for Education and NHS England that supports the government’s priority to increase access of mental health and well-being support for children and young people.
The EMHP training programme offers a unique blend of academic learning and supervised practice while working within THEWS. You will be working directly in primary and secondary schools, as well as further education colleges, gaining invaluable experience and expertise.
The programme is delivered through a combination of taught days with Anna Freud and UCL, independent self-guided study days, and practical experience gained in education well-being and mainstream mental health services.
A Trainee EMHP will be expected to work under supervisioN in a dynamic team where evidence-based interventions, new ideas, ways of working and supporting children and young people (CYP) are actively encouraged. This approach requires flexibility and adaptability, and above all a passion for working with CYP in educational settings.
During the training year, the post-holder will develop their knowledge and practical skills under supervision. They will employ evidence-based interventions for common mental health problems, providing direct individual and group support for children, young people, and their parents/carers, in line with university expectations.
Successful candidates will enrol in a full-time professional training programme to become qualified EMHPs. The course fees are fully funded.
Successful candidates will be expected to travel to the Anna Freud office in North London (N1 9JH) in the first year to complete their training, but the position will be based out of the TH CAMHS offices (E1 5NF) and partnering education settings across the borough.
• Receive an EMHP Postgraduate Diploma upon successful completion of the course.
• Employment with THEWS during course
• Permanent Band 5 THEWS post after successful completion of the course
• 37.5 hours per week inclusive of training days (studying outside of work hours may be required)
• EMHP is recognised as a Wellbeing Practitioner for registration at either BABCP and BPS
East London NHS Foundation Trust (ELFT) provides a wide range of community and inpatient services to children, young people, adults of working age, older adults and forensic services to the City of London, Hackney, Newham, Tower Hamlets (TH), Bedfordshire and Luton. In TH, ELFT provides high standard mental health services for children and young people based on strong partnerships with the Borough’s education and social care services, community health services and voluntary/third sector agencies.
TH is a rapidly growing, vibrant inner-city borough with a young ethnically diverse population who experience some of the highest levels of deprivation in the country. There is a high prevalence of mental health difficulties amongst young people and a high proportion of children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND). In December 2018 Tower Hamlets was named a trailblazer site to pilot the Green Paper Transforming Children and Young Peoples Mental Health Provision initiatives to improve mental health support in school settings, including the establishment of Mental Health Support Teams (MHST). Within Tower Hamlets, our MHST is called the Tower Hamlets Education Wellbeing Service (THEWS). The Green Paper ambitions fit with Tower Hamlets existing strategic direction for Children and Young Peoples Mental Health, to build capacity for early intervention and prevention across local partnerships.
