Hours per week: 36 Monday – Friday, normal working hours

This opening assignment is for 4-5 months

City: WESTMINSTER, LONDON

You will form part of a large team who deliver a 24/7 service, responsible for reactive communications and reputation management including media inquiries and engagement across digital channels as well as generating proactive news. Also provide communication support to spontaneous and planned events, including protest and disorder as well as large-scale gatherings and festivals and ceremonial events.

Provide support to frontline officers, respond to media inquiries and monitor public commentary. Undertake media monitoring, working with colleagues from the content and channels team to provide a rapid response service - delivering response and rebuttal across digital channels. Help deliver a media service, media strategy, effectively managing proactive and reactive communications of high-profile and often controversial issues in a fast-paced environment.

Key Responsibilities:

Working across Communication and Engagement to deliver high quality proactive and reactive communications for internal and external channels.
Draft compelling key messages, narratives, statements and communications plans that reflect the tone and priorities of your key delivery area.
Provide an outstanding and enhanced media and digital monitoring service. Having a strong, proactive grip of monitoring all key issues, taking decisive action to insert the organisation’s voice where necessary and rebutting inaccuracies quickly.
Represent communications with officers and staff, including strategic meetings overseeing significant incidents and long running issues, to provide the highest quality communications advice.

Every member of our team is expected to be multi-skilled and work across several communication disciplines using modern up-to-date professional practice.  
Support the strategic planning of communication activity across disciplines, building on three-month plans and providing clear and concise communication advice and insightful communication plans and evaluation.  
Understand the A New Met for London plan and the Commissioner’s priorities and use this to implement key messages clearly, accurately and creatively across channels. 
Set up and manage media facilities, briefings and interviews with senior colleagues, provide briefings and Q&As, create engaging and compelling media content and quality assure reactive statements.

Knowledge:

A strong understanding of effective media and channel monitoring, including the use of a range of digital tools to support this.
A practical understanding of using data and insight to drive communications and of the importance of targeting audiences as well as evaluation.
Demonstrable understanding and experience of shaping and delivering digital content, and knowledge of a range of channels as ways of engaging audiences.

Experience:

Experience of leading and driving proactive media planning and creative media campaigns across a wide portfolio. Experience of planning and executing integrated communications plans with multiple stakeholders.
Private or public sector experience. Candidate who have worked in a public sector who may hold or have been recently cleared by a central government department or police force would be ideal
Experience in a busy news environment, particularly for reactive roles.
Good judgement and experience to manage media inquiries and navigate the organization.
Experience of providing timely and professional advice to and confidence in influencing senior figures on complex issues. 
Evidence of taking and processing complex information to produce appropriate, clear and effective communication materials. 
Evidence of delivering high quality, fast-time rebuttal on digital channels and an understanding of how this can shape media narratives.
A proven track-record in a busy media operation, including handling multiple, reactive demands across a range of themes and with different audiences.

Skills & Abilities:

Exceptional written and verbal communication skills and a passion for telling the story of the Met across different channels.
Quality writing skills to condense complex information into understandable content.
Strong co-ordination skills, sharing and escalating opportunities and challenges where appropriate and liaising with operational colleagues in a large and complex organisation. 
Able to work at pace and under deadline pressure on fast-moving opportunities and challenges, set out effective handling and oversee consistent messaging. 
Ability to identify and drive communication opportunities.
