Summary

BHRUT Emergency Departments have been recognised as the most improved Emergency Departments in the country. Our recent positive CQC inspection of Queen's Emergency Department recognised the significant improvements that have been and made.

We are looking to appoint a Head of Nursing to join the Clinical Group to support the continuing improvement journey across the Acute Medical wards and Emergency Department at Queens Hospital. You will be responsible for delivering Senior Nurse Leadership to the Emergency Department and Acute Assessment units based at the Queens Hospital site. The Head of Nursing will work with their Triumvirate colleagues to develop the services ensuring that the services meet the needs of the patients that are accessing the services.

You will lead a team of dynamic and inspirational Matrons and Deputy Matrons supporting them to ensure that the highest standards of evidence-based practice are being delivered to our patients. You will need to be able to work in a high-pressure environment and be able to work to clear deadlines. You will need to be a compassionate and motivational leader with a clear vision of the role of nursing in delivering care for the 21st century. There are opportunities for career development, and this will be tailored to the needs of the successful applicant.

The Head of Nursing role is a senior nursing role providing leadership and direction to nursing staff within a designated directorate or site, consisting of multiple specialties located across Queen’s and King George Hospitals, and other satellite sites.

The post holder will work in a directorate triumvirate with the Clinical Director and the General Manager, with a particular focus on providing high quality, safe, well-governed, productive and cost-effective services which support the Trust in delivering its strategic objectives.

This role along with triumvirate colleagues will provide compassionate and inclusive leadership to those within their areas of responsibility. In addition, there will be joint responsibility and accountability with the triumvirate for delivering, patient safety, financial targets, efficiencies, workforce planning and service delivery to improve safe patient flow within and outside the directorate.

Under the leadership of our Chair Jacqui Smith and Matthew Trainer, our Chief Executive, we provide care for the residents of three of the most diverse London boroughs. More than half of our 7,500 strong workforce are from black, Asian and minority ethnic groups and most live in Barking and Dagenham, Havering and Redbridge. We also provide healthcare services to people in south west Essex, and specialist neurosciences services to the whole of the county.

Our services include all the major specialties of large acute hospitals, operating from two main sites - King George Hospital in Goodmayes and Queen’s Hospital in Romford. We also provide outpatient services at Brentwood Community Hospital, Barking Hospital, Loxford Polyclinic, and Harold Wood Polyclinic. We have two of the busiest emergency departments in London.

As we recover from Covid-19, we’re proud to be leading the way nationally in reducing the time our patients wait to get the treatment they need. The pandemic provided the drive for our teams to innovate and change.

We know we have more work to do to improve waiting times for urgent and emergency care, and our performance against the four-hour emergency access standard remains challenged, in comparison to many other London trusts.

We are particularly proud of our regional Neurosciences Centre; Radiotherapy Centre; Hyper Acute Stroke Unit; and dedicated breast care service at King George Hospital. We’re also pleased to be part of the NEL Cancer Alliance.
